Pollocks Textbook of Cardiovascular Disease and Rehabilitation

Pollock's Textbook of Cardiovascular Disease and Rehabilitation

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Pollock's Textbook of Cardiovascular Disease and Rehabilitation honors the legacy of the late Michael L. Pollock, PhD (1936-1998). Pollock, an innovative and influential cardiac researcher and clinician, was highly regarded for his substantial educational and scientific contributions to the field of exercise science and sports medicine. This text presents an approach to cardiovascular disease rehabilitation as comprehensive as the vision that Dr. Pollock so passionately pursued during his 35-year career. Pollock's Textbook of Cardiovascular Disease and Rehabilitation addresses developing topics encompassing all aspects of the cardiovascular system. This text breaks away from Medicare-driven reimbursement paradigms for “cardiac rehabilitation” to discuss the entire cardiovascular system, not only coronary heart disease. In doing so, it provides a much-needed perspective for health professionals and their patients, especially those patients who need help but do not fit traditional entry criteria for cardiac rehabilitation. The text's editors, each a premier cardiovascular science expert, have selected an internationally recognized list of contributors to provide the deliberate and systematic coverage of cardiovascular topics in five comprehensive parts. They begin by laying a foundation that covers the historical and epidemiologic overview of the evolution and current state of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This consists of a discussion of the use of exercise as medicine as well as a description of interventions, clinical guidelines, and outcomes. The text continues by addressing pathophysiology, diagnosis of conditions (such as peripheral arterial disease, stroke, and aneurysm), and medical management strategies. Readers will find a current pharmacologic review of medications, the mechanism of action, side effects, and exercise interactions, in addition to current surgical techniques. They will also find an entire chapter dedicated to heart disease in women. Often overshadowed by the attention given to cancer, heart disease is the predominant killer of women, yet few texts cover the topic as thoroughly as Pollock's Textbook. Because the female population presents specific concerns and cardiovascular complications, this chapter alerts physicians and health practitioners of the elements they must consider when managing heart disease in these patients.Once readers understand the theories behind diagnosis and management of CVD, they are led through the facets of lifestyle issues associated with CVD. Research-based information provides outlines for endurance, strength, and flexibility training specific to CVD; nutrition and dietary factors as well as pharmacotherapies associated with reducing CVD risk; and rehabilitation strategies for specific cardiovascular conditions. More specific information follows on common comorbidities and complicating circumstances associated with cardiovascular disease. Part IV of the text is dedicated entirely to this aspect of the disease. The first half of the part focuses on the range of comorbidities including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and dyslipidemia; the second half discusses complicating circumstances such as arthritis, psychosocial risk, complications due to stroke, neuropsychiatric disorders, and aspects of sleep. These risk factors are important for physicians to consider in the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, particularly as they are planning rehabilitation programs. The text concludes with a more practical-based part to help those readers understand the rehabilitation process and apply the research to specific cardiovascular conditions.Pollock's Textbook on Cardiovascular Disease and Rehabilitation is a comprehensive text that seeks to honor the late Dr. Michael Pollock. The text reflects the growth of the profession by assisting all health professionals who continue to focus, in both research and practice, on finding answers to alleviate cardiovascular disease.

Textbook of Evolutionary Psychiatry The origins of psychopathology

Textbook of Evolutionary Psychiatry: The origins of psychopathology

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
In the past couple of decades, studies investigating the genetic background of psychiatric disorders have mushroomed. Research into the brain mechanisms and regions of the brain involved in certain dysfunctions have greatly improved our knowledge of the relationship between brain pathology and psychopathology. By contrast, we know far less about 'why' certain individuals remain vulnerable to psychiatric disease at all, and whether they were selected by evolutionary forces or simply by-products of other species-specific characteristics. This comprehensive book presents a new integrative approach to understanding psychopathological conditions - an approach that embraces cognition, emotion, behaviour, and their nature-nurture interactions. Central to this approach is the introduction of human evolution into the psychiatric model - psychiatrists need to know why the human mind and brain evolved in the way it did. In three parts, the book presents a comprehensive account of human brain evolution in terms of physical features and function, showing how these relate to our current understanding of psychopathology. Accessibly written, the book shows how a consideration of evolutionary factors in psychiatry can improve our understanding and treatment of specific disorders such as suicidal behaviour, anorexia, and depression.

The Complementary Therapists Guide to Conventional Medicine A Textbook and Study Course 1e

The Complementary Therapist's Guide to Conventional Medicine: A Textbook and Study Course, 1e

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
The Complementary Therapist's Guide to Conventional Medicine is a unique textbook for students and practitioners of complementary medicine, offering a systematic comparative approach to Western and Eastern medicine. Practitioners of complementary medicine increasingly find themselves working alongside conventionally trained doctors and nurses and it is vital for them to develop a core understanding of conventional medical language and philosophy. The book is designed as a guide to understanding conventional medical diagnoses, symptoms and treatments, whilst also encouraging the reader to reflect on and translate how these diagnoses may be interpreted from a more holistic medical perspective. Throughout the text the practitioner/student is encouraged to see that conventional and more holistic interpretations are not necessarily contradictory, but instead are simply two different approaches to interpreting the same truth, that truth being the patient's symptoms. After introductory sections on physiology, pathology and pharmacology, there follow sections devoted to each of the physiological systems of the body. In these, the physiology of each system is explored together with the medical investigation, symptoms and treatments of the important diseases which might affect that system. As each disease is described, the reader is encouraged to consider the corresponding Chinese medical perspective. The textbook concludes with chapters relating specifically to dealing with patients in practice. In particular these focus on warning signs of serious disease, supporting patients on medication and ethical issues which may arise from management of patients which is shared with conventional practitioners. The book also offers a detailed summary of 'Red Flag symptoms' which are those which should be referred for 'Western' medical investigation or emergency medical treatment, and also a guide to how patients can be safely supported in withdrawing from conventional medication, when this is clinically appropriate. Those wishing to use the text for systematic study can make use of the question and problem-solving approach offered on the accompanying CD to which references to self study exercises appear at regular stages throughout the book. This means that the text can be easily adapted to form the basis of a study course in clinical medicine for students of complementary medicine. In addition to the self-testing questions and answers, the supporting CD also contains checklists for revision and full-colour illustrations. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Clare Stephenson is a qualified medical practitioner who worked in hospital medicine, general practice and public health medicine for a number of years before training in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture. Over the course of a decade she developed and taught an undergraduate course for students of Chinese medicine on Western medicine and how it relates to TCM. She is particularly committed to encouraging communication and understanding between practitioners of different health disciplines. She currently works as a GP in Oxfordshire.

The Amnesias A Clinical Textbook of Memory Disorders

The Amnesias: A Clinical Textbook of Memory Disorders

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
This concise but comprehensive text provides a systematic account of the memory disorders, whether they result from psychological stress, traumatic injury, stroke, or degenerative disease of the brain. The major amnesia syndromes are covered in consistently organized chapters that give a clear description of the clinical signs and symptoms, predisposing factors, prevalence and prognosis, pathophysiology to the extent that it is known, diagnostic approaches including tests used to evaluate the disorders, and therapeutic efforts. The book's emphasis is on facts rather than theory, and readers from a variety of disciplines will appreciate its clear, jargon-free, well-organized assessment of the state of knowledge about the memory disorders. These disciplines include neurobiology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, cognitive neuroscience, rehabilitation medicine, and gerontology. Even theorists will find the book useful since any theory of memory and its neurophysiological mechanisms must be constrained by the facts of amnesia if it is to be considered complete. The book's clearcut scheme of organization will enhance its value and user-friendliness. It divides the amnesias into three types: progressive, permanent, and transient. The first type includes amnesias associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and with vascular dementias, contrasting them with memory decline resulting from normal aging. The second type consists of classic amnesic syndromes associated with limbic lesions of various etiologies such as Korsakoff's encephalopathy and traumatic brain injuries. The third type includes transient global, transient epileptic, and ECT-induced amnesias as well as the reversible psychogenic amnesias associated with dissociative and fugue states. These discussions are preceded by two introductory chapters that define the mnemonic and amnesic phenomena, classify the various memory systems and functions, and describe the putative brain circuitry underlying these functions, including molecular mechanisms, neurotransmitter systems, and the effects of stress-related hormones and drugs, with the aid of magnetic resonance images and anatomical drawings.

Introduction to Coordination Chemistry Inorganic Chemistry A Textbook Series

Introduction to Coordination Chemistry (Inorganic Chemistry: A Textbook Series)

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
At the heart of coordination chemistry lies the coordinate bond, in its simplest sense arising from donation of a pair of electrons from a donor atom to an empty orbital on a central metalloid or metal. Metals overwhelmingly exist as their cations, but these are rarely met ‘naked’ – they are clothed in an array of other atoms, molecules or ions that involve coordinate covalent bonds (hence the name coordination compounds). These metal ion complexes are ubiquitous in nature, and are central to an array of natural and synthetic reactions.Written in a highly readable, descriptive and accessible style Introduction to Coordination Chemistry describes properties of coordination compounds such as colour, magnetism and reactivity as well as the logic in their assembly and nomenclature. It is illustrated with many examples of the importance of coordination chemistry in real life, and includes extensive references and a bibliography.Introduction to Coordination Chemistry is a comprehensive and insightful discussion of one of the primary fields of study in Inorganic Chemistry for both undergraduate and non-specialist readers.

Evidence-Based Mental Health Practice A Textbook

Evidence-Based Mental Health Practice: A Textbook

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
The movement to make medicine more scientific has evolved over many decades but the specific term evidence-based medicine was introduced in 1990 to refer to a systematic approach to helping doctors to apply scientific evidence to decision-making at the point of contact with a specific consumer. As the philosophy, major tenets, and techniques of the movement have evolved, evidence-based medicine has strongly influenced individual health care decision-making, the practices offered in health care programs, and the structure of medical and public health systems. Evidence-based medicine has also begun to influence the field of mental health. As support for evidence-based medicine grows in mental health, the need to clarify its fundamental principles also increases. In dealing with the new era of evidence-based practice, mental health practitioners are now confronted with a sense of obligation to understand these practices and to implement them in order to provide the best available services to consumers. This book explores some of the complex challenges in implementing EBPs, and highlights the meaningful opportunities that are inherent in this paradigm shift. This comprehensive textbook will become an essential primer for all practitioners and students who are grappling with the new age of evidence-based practice.
