Meaning-Centered Grammar (Equinox Textbooks and Surveys in Linguistics)
Get free shipping on orders over $25!
(In-Stock)
Rather than narrowly dividing language between correct and incorrect, this book promotes a respect for the power and usefulness of language in all its forms. It draws from a number of linguistic grammars, traditional grammar, and contemporary composition theory, yet achieves a unified synthesis by seeing each of these as ways to understand the language itself and its natural, inherent, meaning-making grammatical system. The book draws heavily on real world writing, including authors like Annie Dillard, Richard Rodriguez, John McPhee, Alice Walker, Tim O'Brien, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Cornel West. Though the book is primarily a linguistically based exploration, the final two chapters move into the practical world of real world application in writing (including punctuation) and reading (grammatical analysis.) It does not stop at the isolated sentence, but considers ways in which grammar works in longer passages and in harmony with rhetorical purposes. Its direct focus is on developing an understanding of language and not on directly changing language behavior. It should be of great interest to writing teachers or grammar teachers looking for alternatives to narrow prescriptive approaches or the disinterested descriptions of much contemporary linguistics.

Simplified Scientific Astrology; A Complete Textbook on the Art of Erecting a Horoscope, With Philosophic Encyclopedia and Tables of Planetary Hours
Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com!
(In-Stock)
This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text, images, or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1919. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. HOW TO CALCULATE THE POSITIONS OF THE PLANETS As the Ephemeris is calculated for Greenwich at the time when the Observatory clock strikes twelve, it is necessary to make corrections for other hours and for places East or West from that point when it is desired to calculate a horoscope. By adding four minutes for each degree of longitude the birthplace is West of Greenwich to the true local time of birth we obtain the Greenwich Mean Time as recorded by the Observatory clock. This is written G. M. T. We will apply this rule to calculate the G. M. T. of the horoscope for August 2, 8:15 A. M. at Chicago, which is 88 degrees West longitude: H. M. True Local Time of Birth (see page 38)8 23 A. M. Aug. 2 4 min. times 88 degrees equal 352 min. 5 52 Greenwich Mean Time (G. M. T.)... 2 15 P. M. Aug. 2 Multiplying the degree of West longitude of Chicago (88 degrees) by four minutes gives us 352 minutes, which we divide by 60 because there are 60 minutes in each hour. Thus we obtain 5 hours 52 minutes, which we add to the true local time of birth, 23 minutes after 8 in the morning, and the sum is 15 minutes past 2 o'clock in the afternoon, which is the G. M. T. That is to say, at the identical time when the child was born and the Chicago clocks pointed to 15 minutes after 8 o'clock in the morning, the Observatory clock at Greenwich showed 15 minutes past 2 o'clock in the afternoon. This latter is the time we must use to make our calculations of the planets' places, and in order to have as few factors in mind as possible the beginner is advised to forget the local time of birth when once he has found the G. M. T. In Western longitudes the G. M. T. may advance into the day following birth on account of the addition of 4 minutes for each degree of longitude....

Style: An Anti-Textbook

“A necessary manual for those interested in the perpetuation, and the possibilities, of good English prose.”—Harper’s Magazine “[Lanham’s] style is notable for its audacity, liveliness, and grace.”—The Times Literary Supplement “The most applicably provocative book on the subject of prose style available. Imperative reading for all teachers and students of writing.”—Choice This humorous and accessible classic on style calls for the return of wordplay and delight to writing instruction. Richard Lanham argues that many tomes on writing, with their trio of platitudes—clarity, plainness, sincerity—lie “upon the spirit like wet cardboard.” People seldom write to be clear. They have designs on their fellow men. Pure prose is as rare as pure virtue, and for the same reasons. . . . The Books [Lanham’s term for misguided composition textbooks], written for a man and world yet unfallen, depict a ludicrous process like this: “I have an idea. I want to present this gift to my fellow man. I fix this thought clearly in mind. I follow the rules. Out comes a prose that gift-wraps thought in transparent paper.” If this sounds like a travesty, it’s because it is one. Yet it dominates prose instruction in America. Richard A. Lanham is professor emeritus of English at the University of California, Los Angeles, and president of Rhetorica, Inc., a consulting and editorial services company. He is the author of numerous books on writing, including A Handlist of Rhetorical Terms, Analyzing Prose, The Electronic Word, and most recently, The Economics of Attention.

What Johnny Shouldn’t Read: Textbook Censorship in America
Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com!
(In-Stock)
In this lucid, disturbing, and provocative book, Joan Delfattore offers a behind-the-scenes view of the ways in which special-interest groups influence the content of textbooks used in public and private schools throughout the country. Efforts to censor elementary and high school textbooks have proliferated in the past decade. Most challenges have come from ultraconservative activists who oppose evolution, racial and ethnic equality, nontraditional gender roles, pacifism, and a host of other issues that contradict their religious, political, or social views. Other protests originate with ultraliberal activists whose goal is to eliminate all negative or traditional descriptions of racial, ethnic, religious, or gender groups, without regard for accuracy or historical context. DelFattore focuses on recent federal lawsuits involving attempts to censor or ban biology, geology, history, home economics, literature, psychology, reading, and social studies textbooks. She vividly re-creates the story behind each lawsuit, describing how politically sophisticated national organizations turn local controversies into nationally publicized court cases. She also discusses how both ultraliberal and ultraconservative groups in Texas and California pressure their state Boards of Education to demand that sections of textbooks be eliminated or rewritten as a condition of selling the books in those states. Because California and Texas are such important markets, says DelFattore, publishers almost always make the required changes in the books, which are then sold nationwide. As a result, the content of American textbooks is heavily influenced by political and economic forces as well as by educationalconsiderations. DelFattore's investigation has profound implications not only for education but also for freedom of thought in the larger society. Her book will be mandatory reading for parents, teachers, school administrators, lawyers, librarians, and other concerned citizens.

PREFACE. THE preparation of this book was epn several years ago, j hen much of the subject-matter treated was not to be found in print, or was scattered through many. books and pamphlets, and ITas Ilei ce unavailable for student use. Portions of the book have already been printed by the mimeograph process or have been used as lecture-notes, and hence have been subjected to the refilling process of classroom use. The author would call special attention to the following features a. Transition curves the multiform-componnd-cnrre method isused, which has been followed by many railroads in this country the particular curves here developed have the great advantage of being exceedingly simple, and although the method is not theuretically exact, it is demonstrable that tlie differences are so sinall tl ath ey may safely be neglected. b. h system of earthwork complitations by means of a sliderule which accompanies tlie volurne which enables one to compute readily tlie volume of the niost complicated earthwork forms itli an accuracy only limited by the pl ecision of the cross-sectioning. c. The mass curve in earthwork the theory and use of this very valuable process. tl. Tables I, 11, 111, and IV hare been co nputed a6 nmo. Tables I and I1 were cliecked after compntation with other tables, which are generally considered as standard, and all discrepancies were further examined. They are believed to be perfect. iii PREFA CE. e. Tables V, VI, VII, and IT have been borrowed, by yermission, from Ludlows Mathelnatical Tables. It is believed that five-place tables give as accurate results as actual field practice requires. Tables V111 and X hare been compiled to conform with Ludlows system. The author wishes to acknowledge liis indebtedness to Mr. Chas. A. Sims, civil engineer and railrod contractor, for reading and revising the portions relating to the cost of eartllwork. Since the book is written primarily for students of railroad engineering in technical institutions, t l eau thor has assumed the nsnal previous preparation in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The Classics of Judaism: A Textbook and Reader
Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com!
(In-Stock)
In order to understand the faith of Judaism, according to Jacob Neusner, one must look at the very foundation of that faith: the Torah. To believers, this act of studying the Torah provides a direct and immediate link to the living God and forms the very basis of a faithful Jewish life. In this book, Jacob Neusner introduces the reader to selections from all the documents of the Torah, in addition to Scripture, that define the canon of Judaism in its formative age. The Classics of Judaism is, however, more than a collection of writings. It is also a primer for learning how to approach and read any book of Judaism.
