The official video game of the 2000 Olympics, Sydney 2000 borrows heavily from the gameplay of the 1983 arcade classic Track and Field. Players "power" their virtual athletes by hammering on two buttons in an alternating sequence as fast as possible, with the manipulation of a third button required at certain times to perform a particular action. Unfortunately, the novelty here wears off pretty darn quick, especially when using the Dreamcast's standard controller, which is just barely adequate for such frenzied button mashing; you really need an arcade stick for this one. While not all of Sydney 2000's 12 events use this tedious control system, the few that don't feature similarly shallow-as-a-puddle gameplay. What's worse, in order to make it to the Games in Olympic mode, players must "train" their team in a series of tiresome Virtual Gym exercises, which involve--you guessed it--lots and lots of button mashing. Thankfully, Sydney 2000's Arcade and Coaching modes allow players to jump right into any event. Are you sick of fighting games that require months of practice just to master the basic moves? Try JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, a side-scrolling 2-D fighting game that puts the focus squarely on kicking butt. And along with the great controls and colorful graphics that look like they were ripped straight out of a cartoon, players are treated to a fairly entertaining story as the game progresses. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure adds a few more twists to the standard 2-D fighting genre, and the strangest are the sidekicks called Stands that each player has. These familiars occasionally enter the fray when the action heats up, and combined attacks with the characters and the Stands are the most powerful in the game. The onscreen action can get a little confusing since so many things are happening at once, but the simplistic controls help keep things manageable. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is not the best 2-D fighting game ever made--in fact, in many ways it seems downright dated when compared to superior 3-D fighters such as Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2. However, if you are seeking a simple fighting fix, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure does make a solid and colorful addition to the Dreamcast lineup. --T.
