The film opens with the scene Kabir (Abhay Deol) proposing to Natasha (Kalki Koechlin). The families meet at their engagement party where Imraan (Farhan Akhtar) and others raise a toast to them. At the engagement party, Natasha learns that Kabir is planning a three week long bachelor road trip to Spain with his high school friends Imraan and Arjun (Hrithik Roshan). Kabir explains that the three men have a long-standing pact, and that during the road trip, each one would pick an adventure sport for the trio to try. However, Arjun, a workaholic obsessed with making money, is reluctant to take part in the trip. Later, it is revealed that Arjun's ex girlfriend had left him due to his same obsession with work. Imraan, though, has an additional personal agenda on the trip - to find his biological father Salman Habib (Naseeruddin Shah) an artist in Spain. They finally set off to Spain, where they plan on to visit the Costa Brava, Seville and Pamplona. They meet Laila (Katrina Kaif), a British-Indian woman on the Costa Brava beach and Imraan flirts with her. Kabir reveals that he has chosen deep sea diving, and they find out that Laila is their diving instructor. Arjun, who can't swim and is mortally afraid of water, is helped by Laila to overcome his fears and explore the world. He soon begins to develop romantic feelings for her. They attend Buñol the La Tomatina festival with Laila, where they meet Laila's friend Nuria (Ariadna Cabrol) who falls for Imraan. In the meantime, Natasha, who has grown suspicious of Kabir's involvement with Laila, surprises Kabir by crashing his bachelor party. Imraan meanwhile spends time with Nuria and Arjun with Laila. After the boys leave, Laila realizes she has fallen in love with Arjun and they express their feeling for each other by a deep passionate kiss after she catches up to them......

Poppy is spoiled. OK, Poppy, played with snottiness galore by Emma Roberts, is wicked-impossible spoiled. As Wild Child opens, Poppy is having a Malibu meltdown, in the form of tossing her dad's new girlfriend's clothing into the Pacific--just past the edge of the infinity pool."This is the last straw, Poppy!" shouts her beleaguered dad (Aidan Quinn). So off Poppy goes--to boarding school. In England. Where it rains 200 days a year. If Wild Child has few plot surprises--selfish kid learns respect for others with the persistence and pluck of new friends and firm authority figures--it's still a lark, because of Roberts' considerable winsomeness, and because the dreaded England ends up showing considerable charm of its own, which draws in both Poppy and the viewer. Wild Child also marks something bittersweet, the last film performance of Natasha Richardson (who died in March 2009). Richardson is winning as the strict but warmhearted headmistress, Mrs. Kingsley, making what could be a one-dimensional character complex. Richardson is totally self-possessed and grounded, and in some shots seems to channel another great British actress, Emma Thompson. The great Scottish character actress Shirley Henderson also makes a sly appearance as the matron with the dry-as-bone-china sense of humor. "What is this place, Hogwarts?" sneers Poppy when she arrives at the remote 18th-century school. But what happens to Poppy is in some ways even more transformative than the goings-on at Harry Potter's school. Flirtation and love hover in the air, in the form of Mrs. Kingsley's hunky son, Freddie (Alex Pettyfer); and Poppy's flair for the dramatic and her undeniable leadership skills galvanize the student body, in some unexpected ways. Roberts is becoming a delightful actress with charisma and nuance. And as the Wild Child is tamed, a lovely young woman is revealed. --A.T. Hurley

Reminiscent of KINDERGARTEN COP with a dash of SPY KIDS THE SPY NEXT DOOR blends together an entertaining mixture of family fun and martial-arts comedy styling to form a familiar story that once again reminds us that even hardened action heroes have a soft side. Jackie Chan stars as Bob Ho an international spy on loan to the CIA who gives up his job in hopes of leading a so-called normal life with his next-door-neighbor girlfriend and her rambunctious brood. There's nothing in SPY that the audience hasn't seen before from similarly themed incarnations think THE PACIFIER but fans will appreciate director Brian Levant's homage to Jackie Chan's past Hong Kong movie blockbusters -- most notably POLICE STORY and THE LEGEND OF DRUNKEN MASTER -- during the opening credit sequence which is fitting considering many of the action sequences are derivative of those films. The main story centers on Bob's relationship with artsy single mom Gillian Amber Valletta and her three kids: precocious teenage stepdaughter Farren Madeline Carroll nerdy middle child Ian Will Shadley and adorably energetic Nora Alina Foley. After an emergency sends Gillian away to Denver Bob steps up and offers to watch the kids while she's gone. Ill-equipped to handle a situation that's clearly over his head Bob utilizes his spy skills and gadgets -- video watch GPS tracking x-ray glasses -- to gain control over the situation in hopes of winning over the kid's affection but when an old enemy escapes from prison and threatens his potential family Bob must return to his 007 world of international espionage to protect them. Admittedly there's a certain level of cheese in this film especially when it comes to the Boris-and-Natasha-style villains Poldark Magns Scheving and Creel Katherine Boecher whose silly Russian stereotyped performances and running joke about American fashion unabashedly border on cringe-worthy territory. Not to mention the thinly plotted storyline involving brainiac Ian who accidentally downloads a top-secret formula for oil-eating ooze created by the bad guys which propels the main action of the film. Adding to the pile are the supporting cast members: George Lopez as the traitorous CIA agent Glaze and Billy Ray Cyrus as CIA agent and Bob's BFF Colton James who lends folksy witticisms like "As gone as rum cake at an AA meeting." Even so Chan's charm wins out in the end and THE SPY NEXT DOOR's most effective sequences involve Bob's attempts to bond with the kids -- from taking little Nora shopping for a Halloween costume to helping Ian with school bullies and girls. These comedic moments more or less overshadow an otherwise simplistic narrative and the audience can't help but smile to themselves every time Chan appears onscreen. Die-hard fans might miss the era of classic kick-ass Hong Kong action films but SPY manages to fill that void as an entertaining alternative that kids and parents alike will enjoy.
