Fixed broadband networks can provide far higher data rates and capacity than the currently envisioned 3G and 4G mobile cellular systems. Achieving higher data rates is due to the unique technical properties of fixed systems, in particular, the use of high gain and adaptive antennas, wide frequency bands, dynamic data rate and channel resource allocation, and advanced multiple access techniques.Fixed Broadband Wireless System Design is a comprehensive presentation of the engineering principles, advanced engineering techniques, and practical design methods for planning and deploying fixed wireless systems, including:* Point-to-point LOS and NLOS network design* Point-to-point microwave link design including active and passive repeaters* Consecutive point and mesh network planning* Advanced empirical and physical propagation modeling including ray-tracing* Detailed microwave fading models for multipath and rain* NLOS (indoor and outdoor) propagation and fading models* Propagation environment models including terrain, morphology, buildings, and atmospheric effects* Novel mixed application packet traffic modeling for dimensioning network capacity* Narrow beam, wide beam, and adaptive (smart) antennas* MIMO systems and space-time coding* Channel planning including fixed and dynamic channel assignment and dynamic packet assignment* IEEE 802.11b and 802.11a (WLAN) system design* Free space optic (FSO) link designAt present, there are no titles available that provide such a concise presentation of the wide variety of systems, frequency bands, multiple access techniques, and other factors that distinguish fixed wireless systems from mobile wireless systems. Fixed Broadband Wireless System Design is essential reading for design, system and RF engineers involved in the design and deployment of fixed broadband wireless systems, fixed wireless equipment vendors, and academics and postgraduate students in the field.

Broadband Power Line Communications Systems: Theory and Applications
Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com!
(In-Stock)
This book covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of BPLC technology. Advances in BPLC, which is essentially a blend of classical transmission line (TL) theory and communication and networking theories, have made it possible for broadband services to be used to link urban and rural areas efficiently and economically using a readily available and largely distributed power line infrastructure, for multi-service data transmission, high-speed internet access, and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), etc. Written for both university students in Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications Engineering (senior undergraduate as well as graduate) and industry engineers and specialists involved with planning, design, and improvement of BPLC systems, the book includes chapters on the fundamental aspects of the well-known TL theory, and communication and networking theories as background for the other chapters. The topics covered also include classification of BPLC systems, models for analyses based on TL theory, estimation of channel capacity and performance and finally application of modulation, coding and media access control techniques for boosting the performance of BPLC systems.

Introduction to Broadband Communication Systems
Get free shipping on orders over $25!
(In-Stock)
Broadband networks, such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), frame relay, and leased lines, allow us to easily access multimedia services (data, voice, and video) in one package. Exploring why broadband networks are important in modern-day telecommunications, Introduction to Broadband Communication Systems covers the concepts and components of both standard and emerging broadband communication network systems. After introducing the fundamental concepts of broadband communication systems, the book discusses Internet-based networks, such as intranets and extranets. It then addresses the networking technologies of X.25 and frame relay, fiber channels, a synchronous optical network (SONET), a virtual private network (VPN), an integrated service digital network (ISDN), broadband ISDN (B-ISDN), and ATM. The authors also cover access networks, including digital subscriber lines (DSL), cable modems, and passive optical networks, as well as explore wireless networks, such as wireless data services, personal communications services (PCS), and satellite communications. The book concludes with chapters on network management, network security, and network testing, fault tolerance, and analysis. With up-to-date, detailed information on the state-of-the-art technology in broadband communication systems, this resource illustrates how some networks have the potential of eventually replacing traditional dial-up Internet. Requiring only a general knowledge of communication systems theory, the text is suitable for a one- or two-semester course for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in engineering as well as for short seminars on broadband communication systems.

The Broadband Problem: Anatomy of a Market Failure and a Policy Dilemma
Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com!
(In-Stock)
While the Internet revolution has vastly improved communications among businesses and individuals in the US, pressure has been building for faster and less expensive broadband data services. However, broadband services and prices have not kept pace either with demand or with progress in information technology. This title analyses the markets and policy issues underlying the broadband dilemma. Ferguson asserts that the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and federal policy have failed to provide sufficient levels of new entry, competition and innovation in the local telecommunications market, which remains dominated by monopoly telephone companies. New entrants and Internet-based firms remain disadvantaged relative to the monopoly incumbent local exchange carriers (ILEC). The combined result of these market and policy failures is inadequate technological progress, innovation and productivity growth in advanced Internet services and in telecommunications services in general. Ferguson believes federal policy must be adjusted to ensure the robust infrastructure necessary for advanced Internet services, electronic commerce, open-systems HDTV, videoconferencing and improved voice telephony.
