Our continuing journey through the Holy Lands explores the ancient land now known as Jordan. Sharing a border with Israel, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, Jordan is moving into the 21st Century with a 9, 000 year old footing in the past. The stories of Jordan's past cultures are told in the stories they have left behind. Jerash, with it's hundreds of columns, is one of the world's largest ancient Roman Cities. Rare Terra Cotta Coffins, part of the exhibits at Amman's Archeological Museum, are a fascinating, but little-known, detail of history. Today's Bedouin women practice the same lifestyle their ancestors have for over 1, 800 years. In this closely knit community, customs and traditions have endured. No tour of the Holy Lands is complete without experiencing this land of Jordan. It holds an amazing array of stories and surprises. At Pella, we explore one of the most important archeological sites in the northern region, continuously inhabited for over 6, 000 years, Umm Quis, known in antiquity as Gadara, where legend says that Jesus visited, and Ajlun Castle, an outstanding example of 12th-century Arab/Islamic military architecture, the base for Muslim leader Saladin in his successful campaign to drive the Crusaders from Jordan in 1189. In Jordan's capital city of Amman (ancient Philadelphia), we view the city with its mosques, markets, Roman Theater, Temple of Hercules and Cave of the Seven Sleepers. In Eastern Jordan, we'll find the desert castles of Qasr Amra, with its ancient baths and fantastic frescoes depicting animals and hunting scenes, Qasr Kharanah, a fortress-like structure, built in the form of a castle (experts maintain that it was really a palace in disguise), and Asraq, a Roman/Medieval Islamic fort where T.E. Lawrence made his base during the Arab revolt of 1917. The ancient city of Madaba with its Greek Orthodox Church of St. George contains the famous floor mosaic of the earliest map of the Holy Land. At Umm Er Rasas, archeologists have unearthed the Church of St. Stephen, whose remarkable mosaic floor is decorated with Jordanian, Palestinian and Egyptian city plans. Mt. Nebo, overlooking the Jordan valley, is said to be the place where Moses died. We visit the ruins of a 4th-Century church with its exquisite mosaics. Mukawir (ancient Machaerus) is the fortress built by Herod the Great. Here Herod imprisoned John the Baptist and rewarded Salome's dance with John the Baptist's head. The possible sites of Sodom and Gomorrah are overlooked by the Sanctuary of Lot (an early Christian monastery/church built next to a cave used as a burial site). We'll visit Kerak and Sobek, two great mountaintop 12th-Century Crusader castles, both erected at strategic points and forming a great line with other Crusader castles that stretch from Aqaba to Turkey. We'll also see Petra, the ancient Nabetean city with hundreds of structures carved out of the rose-red sandstone in an immense fissure over 2, 000 years ago. We meet the Bedouins who live there, have breakfast with them in a cave, and attend a Bedouin wedding. In Wadi Rum, where Lawrence of Arabia once rode, we meet the desert police who patrol on camels, and have coffee with Bedouins. Tour Aqaba with its Marine Science Station and beaches, then cross over to Isr'l's port city of Eilat for night life. Visit Timna Park with its King Solomon's Pillars, the Red Canyon and rare rock formations, some with markings from ancient travelers on the Spice Route. In the Negev Desert, we'll visit an alpaca and llama farm, and a remarkable woman who has created succor in the desert - where space, purity and silence brings spiritual cleansing to visitors. In Jerusalem, we relive the story of the destruction of Solomon's 2nd temple on Mt. Moriah in 70 A.D., explore an underground tunnel along the Wailing Wall and visit the Four Sephardi Synagogue to meet a rabbi. At the Druze village of Beit Jann, the highest village in Israel, the Druze culture has not changed much in 1, 000 years. M

EDINBURGH, Scotland: Our camera zooms in on the bagpipes at the Military Tattoo, a colorful fringe play and street musicians--all visual fare at The Edinburgh Festival. The one-mile walk --the Royal Mile-- from Edinburgh's castle leads to the palace of Holyrood House, taking us past the well-preserved homes of Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Burns. Gladstone's End Museum and The Georgian House reveal more Scottish history. Before leaving the city, Rick gets to the tourist information service, explores local walking tours and enjoys Scottish hospitality. NORTH WALES: Wales is a castle-studded little country eager to welcome travelers. On the island of Anglesey--known for its shipwreck rescues, a retired lifeboat mechanic shows off his quiet village. Climbing the ramparts at imposing Beaumauris and other castles, visitors feel the strength of the fortresses and hear tales of Wale's struggle with England. Moving on, our route leads deep into a Welsh slate mine, up to Snowden's summit on a steam train, and to a thriving wool factory. We dine heartily at a noisy medieval banquet in Ruthin and learn a bit of Welsh. TIPS on renting cars and driving in the British Isles. COTSWOLDS & BATH: The Cotswold Way leads from the quaint, thatched village of Chipping Campden to the classic 18th century elegance of Bath. And we walk for a stretch--it's the British way-- stopping for pub grub and tea at a local Public House. A travel-poster image of English country-side comes alive in the flowery villages, ignored mini-versions of Stonehenge and old churches. Rick visits a Roman villa and learns how England's elite has taken the cure at Bath since ancient times. Finally, we explore Avebury, Europe's largest Neolithic stone ceremonial circle. Coasting on the successes of Gods and Monsters and George of the Jungle, Brendan Fraser turns in yet another winning performance in this fish-out-of-water comedy in which Pleasantville meets modern-day Los Angeles, with predictably funny results. Fraser stars as Adam, who was born in the bomb shelter of his paranoid inventor dad (a less-manic-than-usual Christopher Walken), who spirited his pregnant wife (Sissy Spacek, in fine comic form) underground when he thought the Communists dropped the bomb (actually, it was a plane crash). Armed with enough supplies to last 35 years, the parents bring up Adam in Leave It to Beaver style with nary any exposure to the outside world. When the supplies run out, and dad suffers a heart attack, Fraser goes up to modern-day L.A. for some shopping and long-awaited culture shock. More of a cute premise with lots of clever ideas attached than a fully fleshed out story, Blast from the Past is also supposed to be part romantic comedy, as the hunky Adam hooks up with his jaded Eve (Alicia Silverstone) and tries to convince her to marry him and go underground. The sparks don't fly, though, because Silverstone is saddled with the triple whammy of being miscast, playing an underwritten character, and suffering a very bad hairdo. Fraser, however, carries the film lightly and easily on his broad, goofy shoulders, mixing Adam's gee-whiz innocence with genuine emotion and curiosity; only Fraser could pull off Adam's first glimpse of a sunrise or the ocean with both humor and pathos. Also winning is Dave Foley as Silverstone's gay best friend, who manages to make the most innocuous statements sound like comic gems. --Mark Englehart

Rescued by a passing stranger, Betty then has to deal with the man's unwanted attention - she proves far more adept at ridding her house of this rat! Jazz Babies tells how the strip poker-playing girls of Mrs Scrivens' Finishing School are chastened by the unfortunate appearance of Mrs Scrivens herself. 'Young ladies, this is a finishing school and you are all finished!' she declaims. The collection was found about 30 years ago next to a hand grenade in an air raid shelter in West Hampstead, the reels of film stored in canisters hidden either from the bombs or from prying eyes. The vision of people whiling away the hours watching these films whilst hiding from an air raid is probably fantasy - there was no electricity in the shelter for one thing. But it is still interesting to see that they were counted among the valuables that needed protecting. They have been much viewed over the years so the quality of the pictures is not great, but that doesn't detract from the viewing experience. We commissioned an original soundtrack for these intriguing films from leading folk musician Jamie Smith with a brief to push the boundaries of silent film accompaniment in an accessible way.
