A General Upheaval in the Land of the Morning Calm - The most intriguing tidbits about modern Korea When in 1897 the first modern Korean bank issued its first loan, the loan had to be secured against the only property the borrower had in his disposal, his donkey. The loan was repaid at time, but for few days bank managers had to take care of the animal. In the 1930s the Western restaurants were almost absent in Seoul, so if somebody wanted to eat a decent Western-style meal, the only solution would be to go to a Seoul station restaurant, The Grill. More or less all Korean industrialists or politicians, including all president of the 1948-1980 period, visited the place a number of times. When in the 1920s the taxi service began to spread in Korea, most cabs had no meters, so the fixed rate was introduced. It would cost one won to travel to any location within the city limits. In those days this roughly equaled daily earnings of an unskilled laborer. In the 1890s, some mountain pass near Seoul were considered dangerous because of frequent tiger attacks. In 1915 alone, hunters killed 11 tigers nationwide. The last tiger in South Korea was killed as recently as 1921 in Northern Kyongsang, and the last confirmed sighting occurred in 1946. In 1955 a small workshop bearing the proud name of the International Car Company began to manually assemble US Jeeps. Thus inauspiciously began the history of the Korean automobile industry, now one of the world's largest. In the 1960s the Korean government believed that excessive growth of population would undermine the economic growth. So, they waged one of the world's most successful family planning campaigns. In the 1990s, it was the low fertility rate and population aging which came to be seen as major demographic problems in Korea. These and many other facts about changes of the Korean life over the last 150 years can be found in the new book by Andrei Lankov, titled Dawn of Modern Korea. The book is based on the widely read columns Andrei Lankov writes for the Korea Times since 2002. Dawn of Modern Korea deals with those parts of history which are often seen as 'too mundane' to be taken seriously. This is the book about daily life of Korea in the 130 years which followed the 'opening' of the country to foreign exchanges. It treats changes in the food, dress, good and bad habits, it pays attention to how Korean traveled to work, what they did in their leisure time, how did they interact with their friends and relatives. There are many countries which are more successful than Korea. However in most cases their current prominence is a result of long centuries of economic growth. The list of the most wealthy nations has not changed much since the early 1900s and in most cases the word 'developing' in the expression 'developing countries' is scarcely more than a polite euphemism to describe a state of backwardness and hopeless poverty. Only a handful of developing countries have managed to break away from poverty and repression and almost none of them have made this break with anything approaching Korea's speed and efficiency. In the early 1960s Korea was a developing country and even by the unenviable standards of this group it was not doing particularly well. Its per capita GNP was equivalent to that of Papua New Guinea and Nigeria. Nowadays it can compare itself with some of the less successful members of the European Community. Automobiles are everywhere in Korea. But the mass production of the cars in Korea only began in the 1970s. Korea is the world's leader in Internet access, but as late as 1980 it had no color TV broadcasts. Korea is one of the world's most university-oriented societies, but in 1945 less than a quarter of its population had any formal schooling.

What a special book in many ways. Not only does it have five different Absinthe recipes (Straight, California Style, Dripped, Italian Style, and Swiss Style) with a warning never to serve it unless specifically asked due to the injurious qualities of Absinthe, it features an estimated 400 different cocktail recipes! And if that wasn't enough reason to pique curiosity, this book is claimed to be the first printed mention of TWO drinks, the Old Fashioned and Widow's Kiss. Rumor has it that the Old Fashioned traveled up from a distiller/promoter in Kentucky to the Waldorf-Astoria around 1880. If this is the case it didn't take long to make it into print. No fluffy toasts or food recipes in this bartender's guide, just drinks of all kinds to enjoy. George Kappeler had two different editions of this book with about the same ads (including Anheuser Busch) and drinks that came out in this 1895 edition. The other known cover is used as the back of this book.

It was a long time ago and few alive now remember what life was like in England in the years after World War II. Yes, the Luftwaffe and Vengeance weapons had made a fine mess in the south of the country, but during the war years the Yanks were there, millions of them, seducing the womenfolk, brawling in pubs, and, most importantly, spending their pay with local shopkeepers. May, 1945, the war ended and all the Americans left. Most went home, but a sizeable contingent set up shop in Germany, where, to the best of their ability given the local ruins, they carried on as before, seducing the womenfolk, brawling in pubs and spending their pay with the surviving shopkeepers. These Americans were joined by contingents of English, French and Soviet troops. As a result, the surprising fact, long forgotten, is that after the war, conditions in England were even worse than they were in post-Third Reich Germany. Some in Britain rued winning the war, as deprivation became their fate. In London after the war books were so scarce that used vendors had long lists of people waiting for the few books that turned up. For schools in London which taught astrology, the situation was impossible. Responding to the post WWII book shortage, Margaret Hone published this ultimate Astrology Text-Book. She was born in Birmingham, England, on October 2, 1892, at 2:13 am. Her ascendant was 27 Leo; her Sun was 9 Libra; her Moon was 13 Aquarius. Her midheaven was 15 Taurus. Of Ms Hone, James Holden wrote, English astrologer, educator, and author. She was a professional astrologer and private teacher for many years and later was Principal and Director of Studies of the Faculty of Astrological Studies 1954 1969 and Vice President of the Astrological Lodge of London. Mrs. Hone was an advocate of the Equal House system of house division. She is best known in the U.S. for her two instruction manuals. This book is dedicated to Charles E.O. Carter, 1887-1968. Carter succeeded Alan Leo as head of the Astrological Lodge (1920-1952) and was First Principal of the Faculty of Astrological Studies, which he helped found in 1948. Hone succeeded Carter at FAS. She passed away on October 14, 1969. In his Preface, while quick to praise Hone, a personal friend, Charles Carter pointed out that this book s high price was justified, that padding has been rigorously excluded. He goes on to praise the workmanship, the carefully worded definitions, as well as the fact that the book was complete and entire in itself. Save for ephemeris and tables of houses, this one book would suffice beginning as well as advanced students for some years. Hone also includes one of the earliest modern histories of astrology, short biographies of leading astrologers past and present, astrology and public opinion (daily horoscopes in the newspapers were a recent innovation). On a more practical side, Hone gives a thorough analysis of the principal house systems of the day (Equal, Campanus, Regiomontanus, Placidus), and even mentions C.G. Jung s recently developed Depth Psychology. This book was designed to be the best possible teaching text-book, from a woman who was one of the very best teachers of astrology. It is still outstanding today, more than half a century after its first publication.

The Myth of the Modern Presidency is a major contribution to how we ought to think about the American presidency, especially its constitutional roots and historical development. It forcefully challenges the reigning paradigm of the 'modern presidency, ' arguing that all the essential elements of the post-FDR presidency were present in the constitutional design of the framers and were exhibited in practice well before the twentieth century.
