SEEING BECKC. Beck is a portrait of the artist, Charles Beck. We see Beck at work in his studio in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and painting in the countryside nearby. He speaks about the patterns of nature, the beauty of art, and scavenging materials. We see Beck chopping wood, carving a woodblock for a new woodcut, and speaking about the wonder of wood.In the film he hangs a new print of a tulip--a subject he had never been interested in before-saying, "We just had a couple tulips out there that Joyce had gotten. I happened to look inside one day and boy, it was like an art exhibit, just looking inside of a tulip. Just beautiful. Of course, I simplified it quite a bit."This is how Charles Beck answers the question, "What kind of art do you like to look at?" "I'd just as soon look at Mother Nature's art. I used to look at a lot of other painters and be influenced by them, but I've outgrown that. "Lot of times people try to be different. The only time you are really different is by being yourself. It's got to be part of yourself and how you see and how you interpret what you see. "Every artist is a teacher, and wants to be known as someone who has made life a little more meaningful to people who look at his work. They may not think of it as teaching in the formal sense, but it is. It's exposing people to something new, and making them see more and enjoy more. Any good art has a certain amount of challenge to it."In appreciation, the co-director Mike Hazard writes, "The artist Charles Beck has changed the way I see things. "When I travel around our prairie and woodland landscapes, I think of Beck's art often. Sometimes I wonder if a certain scene might inspire the artist too. Mostly, his images flash into mind as I wander. They have become an organic part of my soul."The beauty, the ultimate mystery of life and his deep grounding in the history of art resonate. Beck is a modernist as well as a regionalist in all the profoundest senses of those ideas."His sense of humor in a piece like Fish Houses makes me laugh out loud."Beck is also supremely confident in his vision, while totally grounded and humble as only a Norwegian Lutheran from outstate Minnesota can be."Finally, I must praise his values. Having travelled the world and tasted worldly success, he returned to the small town where he was born. He decided to earn a living with his art as well as live a good life by making art, no matter what the cost. He painted signs until his prints began to put food on the table."He figured out how to make his own frames, cut his own matts, master his techniques and salvage materials. He built his own gallery and house out of wood. He has lived a self-reliant life, literally living off the land."His pictures are beautiful."The video stimulates people of all ages and backgrounds. It is useful for art classes. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.
