The Northrop Grumman (formerly Ryan Aeronautical) RQ-4 Global Hawk (known as Tier II+ during development) is a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) used by the United States Air Force and Navy as a surveillance aircraft. This type of airplane now falls under the larger heading of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or UAVs. "R" is the Department of Defense designation for reconnaissance; "Q" means unmanned aircraft system. The "4" refers to it being the fourth of a series of purpose-built unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). In role and operational design, the Global Hawk is similar to the Lockheed U-2, the venerable 1950s spy plane. It is a theater commander's asset to provide a broad overview and systematic target surveillance. For this purpose, the Global Hawk is able to provide high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-that can penetrate cloud-cover and sandstorms- and Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) imagery at long range with long loiter times over target areas. It can survey as much as 40, 000 square miles (100, 000 square kilometers) of terrain a day. The big difference from the U-2 is, that the commander and others on his operational net now have a real-time connection to view the data as it are gathered. Users no longer have to wait for the plane to return to the ground for the data to be analyzed. Missions for the Global Hawk cover the spectrum of intelligence collection capability to support forces in worldwide peace, crisis, and wartime operations. According to the Air Force, the capabilities of the aircraft allow more precise targeting of weapons and better protection of forces through superior surveillance capabilities. The Global Hawk costs about $35 million USD (actual per-aircraft costs; with development costs also included, the per-aircraft cost rises to $123.2 million USD each.)

The Global Hawk (RQ-4) is a High-Altitude Long-Endurance Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) used by the U.S Air Force. On February 28 1998 Global Hawk made its first flight from Edwards Air Force Base CA. The uniquely designed aircraft is one of the primer intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance collection aircraft of the Iraq war. Capable of long endurance missions at 60 000 feet or above it provides extended coverage near-real-time multi-sensor support to the theater commander and his deployed forces. The integrated sensor suite consists of SAR EO and IR sensors. Each of the sensors provides wide area search imagery and a high-resolution spot mode. The radar also has a ground moving target indicator mode. The Hawk is a relatively large aircraft with a 116 foot wingspan 44 feet in length 26 000 pound take-off weight capable of 30 hour missions with a 3 000 nautical mile range. The Global Hawk is the first UAV to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration to file its own flight plans and use civilian air corridors in the United States with no advance notice. This potentially paves the way for a revolution in unmanned flight including that of automatically piloted passenger airliners. The RQ-4A has already been used operationally during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
