The cruiser Jeanne dArc was the third ship of the French Navy named after Joan of Arc, a national heroine of France . The ship was laid down 1959 and was built as La Resolve. The Supreme Council of the Navy wanted 6 aircraft carriers but had to settle for the two. She was a smaller ship but carried a heavier gun armament. She was launched in 1961 and commissioned in 1964. Serving in peacetime she was a teaching and training vessel for the naval officers application academy. She had an aerial group of two Aerospatiale Puma helicopters, two Aerospatiale Gazelle helicopters and two Alouette III helicopters. In a combat configuration she could carry about ten light and heavy helicopters including the Super Frelon. She was part of the rescue effort of Le Ponant during the hostage-taking incident in April 2008. The Jeanne dArc was decommissioned on 1 September 2008 and is scheduled to be scrapped.
