This new edition of Essentials of Clinical Psychopharmacology is a synopsis and update of the most clinically relevant material from The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology, Third Edition. The Essentials focuses on the aspects of psychopharmacology directly related to clinical care and will appeal to psychiatry residents, primary care physicians, and others interested in a concise tutorial on clinical psychopharmacology. Chapters are devoted to pharmacotherapy in special situations, such as during pregnancy and lactation and in psychiatric emergencies. This section provides the reader with specific information about drug selection and prescribing practices. In addition to the clinical focus of the Essentials, the authors have provided new information based on more recent literature available since publication of the Textbook. Included are updates on the effectiveness and availability of specific drugs and therapeutic approaches.

The first section looks at the biology of the proteins, including genetics, structure, biophysics, electro-physiology, and cell biology. Specific topics there include gap junction channel structure, the chemical gating of connexin channels, electrical signaling with neuronal gap junctions, and pharmacology. A second section explores roles of connexin channels in various organ systems or processes, among them skin biology, the respiratory epithelium, the inner ear, female and male reproduction systems, secretion, and carcinogenesis. The length of the volume prevented more than passing reference to the role of connexins in the immune system and in hematopoiesis, and the possible non-channel functions of the protein. This textbook consists of six chapters. The first chapter highlights the concept of liquid crystals, including chemical structure, phase classification, defect and texture, and continuum theory. It has been carefully written to meet the needs of readers who do not specialize in liquid crystals. The second chapter is related to the theoretical description of liquid crystalline polymers, networks, and gels, which deals with subjects such as the formation of liquid crystallinity in the polymer system, the phase transition and phase diagram, the molecular weight effect, chain conformation, physics properties and so on. In Chapter 3, the molecular engineering of liquid crystalline polymers is introduced. The molecular composition and the molecular weight play essential roles in the molecular design, which are reviewed in detail. In addition, some unusual liquid crystalline polymers are discussed.
