Essentials of Clinical Psychopharmacology

Essentials of Clinical Psychopharmacology

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
This new edition of Essentials of Clinical Psychopharmacology is a synopsis and update of the most clinically relevant material from The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology, Third Edition. The Essentials focuses on the aspects of psychopharmacology directly related to clinical care and will appeal to psychiatry residents, primary care physicians, and others interested in a concise tutorial on clinical psychopharmacology. The book is organized around two major sections of the Textbook. The first section, Classes of Psychiatric Treatments, presents information by classes of drugs and greatly expands on the first edition of the textbook by focusing whole chapters on single drugs in the antidepressant, antipsychotic, and bipolar categories. For each drug within a class, data are reviewed on preclinical and clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, indications, dosages, side effects and toxicology, and drug-drug interactions. Included are data on currently available drugs in the United States and medications that will almost certainly become available in the near future. The second section, Psychopharmacological Treatment, provides specific information about drug selection and prescription and reviews state-of-the-art therapeutic approaches to the treatment of patients with major psychiatric disorders. Also reviewed are pharmacotherapeutic approaches for special populations, such as children and adolescents, medically ill patients, and the elderly. Chapters are devoted to pharmacotherapy in special situations, such as during pregnancy and lactation and in psychiatric emergencies. This section provides the reader with specific information about drug selection and prescribing practices. In addition to the clinical focus of the Essentials, the authors have provided new information based on more recent literature available since publication of the Textbook. Included are updates on the effectiveness and availability of specific drugs and therapeutic approaches.

US and European biological and medical researchers offer a reference and textbook on the connexin family of membrane channel proteins. The first section looks at the biology of the proteins, including genetics, structure, biophysics, electro-physiology, and cell biology. Specific topics there include gap junction channel structure, the chemical gating of connexin channels, electrical signaling with neuronal gap junctions, and pharmacology. A second section explores roles of connexin channels in various organ systems or processes, among them skin biology, the respiratory epithelium, the inner ear, female and male reproduction systems, secretion, and carcinogenesis. The length of the volume prevented more than passing reference to the role of connexins in the immune system and in hematopoiesis, and the possible non-channel functions of the protein. No mention is made of the accompanying disk, except that it is copyrighted. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Pharmacology Principles and Practice

Pharmacology: Principles and Practice

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
This unique and much needed textbook meets the rapidly emerging needs of programs training pharmacologic scientists seeking careers in basic research and drug discovery rather than such applied fields as pharmacy and medicine. While the market is crowded with many clinical and therapeutic pharmacology textbooks, the field of pharmacology is booming with the prospects of discovering new drugs, and virtually no extant textbook meets this need at the student level. The market is so bereft of such approaches that many pharmaceutical companies will adopt Hacker, et al. to help train new drug researchers. The boom in pharmacology is driven by the recent decryption of the human genome and enormous progress in controlling genes and synthesizing proteins, making new and even custom drug design possible. This book makes use of these discoveries in presenting its topics, moving logically from drug receptors to the target molecules drug researchers seek, covering such modern topics along the way as side effects, drug resistance, Pharmacogenomics, and even nutriceuticals, one in a string of culminating chapters on the drug discovery process. *Uses individual drugs to explain molecular actions*Full color art program explains molecular and chemical concepts graphically*Logical structure reflecting the current state of pharmacology and translational research, starting with receptors and finishing with target molecules*Covers such intricacies as drug resistance and cell death*Consistent format across chapters and pedagogical strategies make this textbook a superior learning tool

Liquid Crystalline Polymers

Liquid Crystalline Polymers

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
This textbook consists of six chapters. The first chapter highlights the concept of liquid crystals, including chemical structure, phase classification, defect and texture, and continuum theory. It has been carefully written to meet the needs of readers who do not specialize in liquid crystals. The second chapter is related to the theoretical description of liquid crystalline polymers, networks, and gels, which deals with subjects such as the formation of liquid crystallinity in the polymer system, the phase transition and phase diagram, the molecular weight effect, chain conformation, physics properties and so on. In Chapter 3, the molecular engineering of liquid crystalline polymers is introduced. The molecular composition and the molecular weight play essential roles in the molecular design, which are reviewed in detail. In addition, some unusual liquid crystalline polymers are discussed. Chapter 4 is devoted to the phase identification of liquid crystalline polymers. The techniques involved cover polarizing microscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and other areas. Chapters 5 and 6 summarize the properties and applications of liquid crystalline polymers: Chapter 5 deals mainly with mechanical performance in fiber and composites; Chapter 6 presents the elasticity, viscosity and rheology of liquid crystalline polymers, as well as other important properties.

This book differs from other organic chemistry textbooks in that it is not focused purely on the needs of students studying premed, but rather for all students studying organic chemistry. It directs the reader to question present assumptions rather than to accept what is told, so the second chapter is largely devoted to spectroscopy (rather than finding it much later on as with most current organic chemistry textbooks). Additionally, after an introduction to spectroscopy, thermodynamics and kinetics, the presentation of structural information of compounds and organic families advances from hydrocarbons to alcohols to aldehydes and ketones and, finally, to carboxylic acids.

Integrated Molecular Evolution

Integrated Molecular Evolution

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
Molecular evolution, phylogenetics, genomics, and other related topics are all critical to understanding evolutionary processes. All too frequently, however, they are treated separately in textbooks and courses, such that students fail to connect all of the concepts, principles, and nuances of the evolutionary processes. Integrated Molecular Evolution brings these related areas together in one volume, facilitating student comprehension of often difficult concepts. Incorporating the emerging fields of genomics and bioinformatics with traditional fields such as evolution, genetics, and molecular biology, this volume explores a myriad of topics, including Life on Earth and the possible origins of life The evolution of organisms on Earth and the history of the study of evolution Basic structures of DNA, RNA, proteins, and other biological molecules, and the synthesis of each Molecular biology and the evolution, structure, and function of ribosomes DNA replication and the various ways in which chromosomes are separated Ways in which DNA can be changed to produce mutations, infectious causes of mutation, and repair of DNA Definitions, evolution, and the importance of multigene families Phylogenetic analysis and how researchers use the raw sequence data to reconstruct portions of evolutionary processes Details of the genomes of a variety of organisms, from RNA viruses to eukaryotes, presented in order of complexity Each chapter ends with a summary of key points, forming an effective review and enabling students to isolate critical material. The series of topics and the masterful integration of these topics lead students to a full understanding of evolution and the component processes that have led to biological evolution on Earth.
