Medicinal Chemistry A Molecular and Biochemical Approach

Medicinal Chemistry: A Molecular and Biochemical Approach

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Fully updated and rewritten by a basic scientist who is also a practicing physician, the third edition of this popular textbook remains comprehensive, authoritative and readable. Taking a receptor-based, target-centered approach, it presents the concepts central to the study of drug action in a logical, mechanistic way grounded on molecular and biochemical principles. Students of pharmacy, chemistry and pharmacology, as well as researchers interested in a better understanding of drug design, will find this book an invaluable resource. Starting with an overview of basic principles, Medicinal Chemistry examines the properties of drug molecules, the characteristics of drug receptors, and the nature of drug-receptor interactions. Then it systematically examines the various families of receptors involved in human disease and drug design. The first three classes of receptors are related to endogenous molecules: neurotransmitters, hormones and immunomodulators. Next, receptors associated with cellular organelles (mitochondria, cell nucleus), endogenous macromolecules (membrane proteins, cytoplasmic enzymes) and exogenous pathogens (viruses, bacteria) are examined. Through this evaluation of receptors, all the main types of human disease and all major categories of drugs are considered. There have been many changes in the third edition, including a new chapter on the immune system. Because of their increasingly prominent role in drug discovery, molecular modeling techniques, high throughput screening, neuropharmacology and genetics/genomics are given much more attention. The chapter on hormonal therapies has been thoroughly updated and re-organized. Emerging enzyme targets in drug design (e.g. kinases, caspases) are discussed, and recent information on voltage-gated and ligand-gated ion channels has been incorporated. The sections on antihypertensive, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiarrhythmic, and anticancer drugs, as well as treatments for hyperlipidemia and peptic ulcer, have been substantially expanded. One new feature will enhance the book's appeal to all readers: clinical-molecular interface sections that facilitate understanding of the treatment of human disease at a molecular level.

An Introduction to Clinical Pharmaceutics

An Introduction to Clinical Pharmaceutics

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
This is an introductory undergraduate textbook that considers the importance of pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical dosage form design by considering the clinical use of modern drugs. Although a knowledge of pharmaceutics (physical chemistry applied to pharmaceuticals) is essential in the design and manufacture of modern pharmaceutical dosage forms, a knowledge of the interaction of dosage forms with the body (clinical pharmaceutics) is essential in the practising pharmacist. This textbook will thus describe a variety of dosage forms and their clinical importance and use. The use and behaviour of dosage forms in different age groups and patient groups will also be considered along with recent developments such as personalised therapies and genomics. All of the principles underpinning clinical pharmaceutics will be described using relevant examples from the recent literature and clinical case studies.

Principles of Pharmacology The Pathophysiologic Basis of Drug Therapy 2e

Principles of Pharmacology: The Pathophysiologic Basis of Drug Therapy, 2e

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
This primary textbook for a first course in pharmacology offers an integrated, systems-based, and mechanism-based approach to understanding drug therapy. Each chapter focuses on a target organ system, begins with a clinical case, and incorporates cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, and pathophysiology to explain how and why different drug classes are effective for diseases in that organ system. Over 400 two-color illustrations show molecular, cellular, biochemical, and pathophysiologic processes underlying diseases and depict targets of drug therapy. Each Second Edition chapter includes a drug summary table presenting mechanism, clinical applications, adverse effects, contraindications, and therapeutic considerations. New chapters explain how drugs produce adverse effects and describe the life cycle of drug development. The fully searchable online text and an image bank are available on thePoint.

Basic Pharmacokinetics

Basic Pharmacokinetics

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
This is the essential guide to the study of absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs in the body. Pharmacokinetics and biopharmaceutics courses have been included in pharmacy curricula in the USA and Europe for several years. Pharmacokinetics is the study of absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs in the body. Pharmacists must understand this to ensure appropriate drug regimen for patients. The scope and the intent of this textbook is to provide the reader with a basic intuitive understanding of the principles of pharmacokinetics and biopharmaceutics and how these principles, along with the equations presented in each chapter, can be applied to achieve successful drug therapy. The application of pharmacokinetics principles and equations are illustrated by providing the reader with data available in the literature. As pharmacokinetics is basically mathematical in nature, a chapter has been included to provide the reader with a basic review of the mathematical principles and graphing techniques necessary to understand pharmacokinetics. At the start of each chapter, important objectives are listed to accentuate and identify the key points of the chapter. When an important and clinically applicable equation appears in the text, a paragraph will follow explaining the significance and therapeutic applications of that equation. Additionally, this paragraph includes and explains relevant factors influencing parameters in an equation. When applicable, at the end of an important equation, a general profile illustrating the relationship between the two variables of an equation will be presented. This approach should make the subject matter much more accessible to the student. Each chapter concludes with related problem sets and problem solving exercises for the student to work through. This should enable the reader to become more adept at solving pharmacokinetic problems arising in drug therapy and understanding the applications and utility of equations in clinical pharmacokinetics and practice. As you can see from the contents, the book is organised into eighteen chapters, the first consists of mathematical principles necessary to understand pharmacokinetics and an overview of the subject matter. The remaining chapters are organised in an order which should be easy for the reader to follow. Clearance and other essential fundamental pharmacokinetic parameters are introduced early in the book as the student will need to apply these concepts in subsequent chapters. A uniform set of notation will be adopted throughout the textbook (a table of which will be at start of the book).

Peak States of Consciousness Theory and Applications Volume 2 Acquiring Extraordinary Spiritual and Shamanic States

Peak States of Consciousness: Theory and Applications, Volume 2: Acquiring Extraordinary Spiritual and Shamanic States

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Breakthroughs in Understanding the Biology of ConsciousnessThis textbook covers fundamental discoveries about the biological basis for spiritual and shamanic states, transpersonal experiences, and consciousness itself. Derived from explorations into the very earliest prenatal development, this book describes how consciousness is based on biology inside the cell.Developmental Events: Spiritual and shamanic states are a legacy of our earliest prenatal growth stages. The Primary Cell: Consciousness extends from just one cell of the body.Triune Brains: The cell organelles are the basis of the ‘subconscious’ triune brains.Transpersonal Biology: Spiritual, shamanic, and psychic phenomena are based on access or perception of biological structures inside the cell.Inherent Dangers: Triggering certain prenatal traumas may cause serious or life-threatening problems. With this theoretical foundation, we can now understand what traditional spiritual and shamanic practices do at a biological level, as well as understand what makes different healing therapies effective. More important are the very practical applications – entirely new techniques for spiritual growth and healing become possible, through a synthesis of traditional concepts with modern microbiology. This textbook on the theory of peak states and the biology of consciousness is used in our therapist training classes. Although it is written for professionals, we’ve made it available for laypeople that are interested in the cutting edge of consciousness research and its applications to psychology and medicine.
