The Fairys Return and Other Princess Tales

The Fairy's Return and Other Princess Tales

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
Ever since Newbery Honor author Gail Carson Levine introduced the magical village of Snettering-on-Snoakes in the faraway Kingdom of Biddle, young readers have been laughing their way through her hilarious retellings of famous and not-so-famous fairy tales. Now, for the first time, the six beloved Princess Tales are together in one magnificent volume: The high jinks begin in The Fairy's Mistake, which pokes fun at a meddlesome fairy whose plans for good go terribly awry. In The Princess Test, the author spoofs the notion that a pea can prove a person's pedigree. Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep features a genius of a princess, a hundred years of snooze, two princes, and a flock of balding sheep! Cinderella is a boy in Cinderellis and the Glass Hill, and the glass slipper is a glass hill. In For Biddle's Sake, Parsley tries to forget her beloved prince and get used to life as a Biddlebum Toad. The road to happily-ever-after isn't easy when a baker's son and a princess fall in love in The Fairy's Return. Elements of the classics are woven into these not-so-typical retellings of "Toads and Diamonds, " "The Princess and the Pea, " "Sleeping Beauty, " "The Princess on the Glass Hill, " "Puddocky, " and "The Golden Goose." The fresh and funny twists on favorite fairy tales will win the hearts and capture the imaginations of young readers everywhere.

The Welsh Fairy Book Forgotten Books

The Welsh Fairy Book: (Forgotten Books)

Book Description: "A fairy (also fey or fae or faerie; collectively, wee folk, good folk, people of peace, and other euphemisms) is the name given to an alleged metaphysical spirit or supernatural being. The fairy is based on the fae of medieval Western European (Old French) folklore and romance. Fairies are often identified with related beings of other mythologies (see list of beings referred to as fairies). Even in folklore that uses the term "fairy, " there are many definitions of what constitutes a fairy. Sometimes the term is used to describe any magical creature, including goblins or gnomes: at other times, the term only describes a specific type of more ethereal creature.Fairies are generally described as human in appearance and as having magical powers. Their origins are less clear in the folklore, being variously the dead, or some form of angel, or a species completely independent of humans or angels. Folklorists have suggested that their actual origin lies in a conquered race living in hiding, or in religious beliefs that lost currency with the advent of Christianity. These explanations are not always mutually incompatible, and they may be traceable to multiple sources. Much of the folklore about fairies revolves about protection from their malice, by such means as cold iron (fairies don't like iron and will not go near it) or charms of rowan and herbs, or avoiding offense by shunning locations known to be theirs. In particular, folklore describes how to prevent the fairies from stealing babies and substituting changelings, and abducting older people as well. Many folktales are told of fairies, and they appear as characters in stories from medieval tales of chivalry, to Victorian fairy tales, and up to the present day in modern literature." Grim Fairy Tales

Grim Fairy Tales

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
We all grew up with fairy tales of one kind or another and they perpetuate themselves in phrases we use, 'the Cinderella sister' for example, in pantomimes, plays and - stories. Here are thirty two of the finest twists on fairy tales you would wish to find. Cinderella and Red Riding Hood were the most repeated subjects, with the authors giving a startling new twist to the old tale every time. Snow White is here, as are Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, The Three Little Pigs, The Emperor's New Clothes and Jack and the Beanstalk, among others. There are also new tales created by talented writers to entertain you. The most remarkable thing about this collection is the political undertone to many of the stories, where the writer has used it as a subtle - and in the case of Danica Green, a not so subtle - comment on our society today. It is a theme which I was pleased to see, it meant the writers seriously took on the challenge of writing Grim Fairy Tales to make their statements. Who knows how much of the original writing of the Brothers Grimm was equally political? We know nursery rhymes are, even if their meanings are long lost in obscurity. You will know that thought went into these stories, these tales from long ago given a new look and a new slant. Welcome to the fantastic dark world of grim fairy tales. Watch out for hidden dangers, witches and all.

Joseph Jacob's first volume-English Fairy Tales [1890]-did not exhaust the scanty remains of traditional English folktales. Most of the forty-four tales that appear in More English Fairy Tales had never before appeared in print. In compiling More English Fairy Tales [1894], Joseph Jacobs flouted the Florklorist's creed, choosing to present stories that would fill children's imaginations "with bright trains of images". Vividly painted princesses, Pied Pipers, pots of gold, giants, speaking cats, Kings, Hoybahs, wise men, washerwomen, and more overflow from the pages of this volume, all bound by the common threads of basic moral lessons. Many of the tales were recorded verbatim from storytellers. They are by no means in an authorised form, and even touch on the "vulgar" using archaic and colloquial English. In the times following Jacob's original printing, the literary establishment objected to the use of such archaic colloquialisms. These tales were told for generations in a form that used these dialects and "vulgar" words for effect. However, the traditional form makes these stories all the richer in a modern setting. We invite you to curl up with this volume and be transported back in time to when England had a hundred or more local dialects-a time when the words Lawkamercyme and noddle were commonplace. A percentage of the net sale from this book will be donated to the Prince's Trust for educational scholarships for the underprivileged.

Romanian Fairy Tales

Romanian Fairy Tales

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
"Romanian Fairy Tales" were collected by Mite Kremnitz, a German writer who was a good friend of Queen Elisabeth and co-authored several novels with the queen during the 1800's. Both women used pen names for this purpose. Queen Elisabeth wrote under the name Carmen Sylva, while Mite Kremnitz signed her works as Ditto and Idem. Mite Kremnitz (1852-1916), born Marie von Bardeleben, was the daughter of the famous surgeon Heinrich Adolf von Bardeleben. She grew in Greifswald, London and, starting with 1868, in Berlin. Later she married the doctor Wilhelm Kremnitz and moved with him to Bucharest in 1875. The couple had 2 children. In Romania, Marie became good friends with the Queen Elisabeth and was appointed her maid of honor. Although Mite signed some of her collaborative works with the queen as Ditto and Idem, in 1990 she began authoring under her name, Mite Kremnitz. Eighteen "Romanian Fairy Tales" are included in this collection, including Stan Bolovan, The Wonderful Bird, The Twins and the Golden Star, Youth without Age and Life without Death, The Little Purse with Two Half-Pennies, Mogarzea and His Son, Cunning Ileane, The Princess and the Fisherman, Little Wild-Rose, The Voice of Death, The Old Woman and the Old Man, The Pea Emperor, The Morning and the Evening Star, The Two Step-Sisters, The Poor Boy, Mother's Darling Jack, Tellerchen, and The Fairy Aurora. Many of the Romanian fairy tales start out with something like "once upon a time, something happened. If it hadn't happened, it wouldn't be told." Regardless of your interest in Romanian folklore, legends, or fairy tales, you're bound to enjoy the timeless stories contained in this book.

The Golden Key Fairy Tale

The Golden Key (Fairy Tale)

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Now it is well known that the little creatures commonly called fairies, though there are many different kinds of fairies in Fairyland, have and exceeding dislike to untidiness. Indeed, they are quite spiteful to slovenly people. Being used to all the lovely ways of the trees and flowers, and to the neatness of the birds and all woodland creatures, it makes them feel miserable, even in their deep woods and on their grassy carpets, to think that within the same moonlight lies a dirty, uncomfortable, slovenly house.
