The first thing that hits you about Mojo is that the spirit of the Mudcrutch sessions has carried on with Tom Petty & Heartbreakers. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room - not a studio - facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time.As for the songs, Mojo showcases a wide variety of American music from rock n roll to country and both electric and acoustic blues. And then there are the images in Petty s lyrics which slip in on the melodies and set up a home in your head: The barefoot girl in the high grass chewing on a stick of sugar cane, the run-in with the law that begins when a carload of buddies decide to party with the motel maids, and the hilariously audacious idea of opening an album with an electric blues rocker about Thomas Jefferson s love affair with Sally Hemings. Petty would probably chuck a rock at anyone who called him a poet, but he sure is a southern writer of humor and sensitivity.Mojo has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out reggae number that is unlike anything that Heartbreakers have done before. It s the kind of album nobody s supposed to be able to make anymore. It got here just in time.

Almost two decades, six albums and 32 million records sold, vocalist/guitarist Dexter Holland and bassist Greg K, along with fellow classmate (and school custodian) guitarist Noodles, are still delivering on their seventh and latest effort, Splinter. The album was recorded in L.A. and Atlanta, produced once again by Brendan O Brien (who was behind the boards for 2001 s Conspiracy Of One), with The Vandals Josh Freese sitting in after the departure of drummer Ron Welty, who d been with the band since 1986. Completing the old-school punk reunion are Pennywise s Jim Lindberg and former California gubernatorial candidate Jack Grisham of TSOL (who are signed to Dexter s Nitro Records) doing backing vocals on The Noose and Da Hui. We kept that one on hold for a long time and it s one of my favorites on the record. JAY The banjo really stands out on this track. It tells a lot about life in 2002, how busy you can get being caught up in the rat race. It reminds me of my childhood and it s a really cool tune one of our favorites. GARY LOVE YOU OUT LOUD Brett James, Lonnie Wilson That was another one we got when the tracks were finished. It knocked us out. We just knew we had to cut it. It s Rascal Flatts to a T . It s energy, fun, all about being in love and what any man would want to do for his girl. JOE DON Lonnie s a great writer and a great friend, and he and Brett called and said, Man, we ve got a gift for you. They were right. Yeah, that s definitely us. GARY DRY COUNTRY GIRL - Marcus Hummon, Chuck Jones I was writing with Marcus last year and he said, Mind if I play you a song? He played it in my truck while we were on the way to lunch and I was blown away. The melody is so captivating. I played it for Jay and Gary and we loved it and put it on hold. I put the song You on in the headphones and said, Gosh, this is great! I played it for Marty and they thought it was great too. We called the publisher and the song was on hold for Tim McGraw, whose people said if he didn t cut it by 2 p.m. that day, we could have it. He didn t cut it and we tracked it that day.
