This garden landscape shows a path leading through a mysterious garden whose leaves and flowers take the abstract shapes of the artists imagination. The chickens for that matter appear as engrossed with the scenery as the viewer might be, for the garden rises all around and leads only into an even thicker center where the path disappears. Notice the endless pattern of swirls and circles appearing in the flowered garden and the pattern of gigantic leaves. Garden Path with Chickens, it could be argued, might altogether be a symbolic reference to a femme fatale fantasy so often suggested in Klimts work. The chickens, a metaphor for a bewildered man appear lost and dominated by the surrounding mass of mother nature. As they walk further into her seemingly fertile bosom there is no indication that they will ever walk out again.

Gustav Klimt's artwork conveys sensuality and mystery through decorative texture and tracery.
