Fenster is the duo of New Yorker-turned-Berliner JJ Weihl and Berlin-born Jonathan Jarzyna, that plays de-constructed pop music, layering subtle distortions, melodic chords and city soundscapes under dream narratives. Their sound and recording style has analog warmth, exploring the relationship between machine errors in their circuit-bent beats and the tactile use of objects and instrumentation. Their influences range from The Velvet Underground to the sounds of broken records, the hum of a washing machine, or the faint melodies of oldies tunes through their kitchen radio, at times, reminding you of an American version of The XX. The band's name springs from an ominous incident during the recording of their first album: a window shattered on JJ's head, bestowing her with a bump and the name "Fenster." The album starts off establishing most of its musical themes in the first half of the tracks, introducing characteristic elements such as stripped-down percussion, reverby vocals, slamming doors and dynamic song structures. Starting off with the classic lo-fi pop ballad "Oh Canyon, " the album dives into moodier tracks like "The Hunter" or "Gravediggers, " pairing synthesizers with banjo, and integrating shovels and batteries as percussive instruments. The second half of the album begins with the suicidal sea ballad, "Fisherman, " a song based around a randomly generated rhythm, incorporating electric guitar, glockenspiel and zither that culminates in a four-part harmony underscored by drums recorded in a freight elevator building up to the final moment in which the guitar sonically drowns. On "Killer Surf Walker, " a pastiche of '50s surf rock, a slide guitar is paired with an old out-of-tune piano, and a recording of a beach in Brooklyn at sunset. Lyrically, the album touches on everything from Schadenfreude to nostalgia about the beginning of one's adult life and the illusion of invincibility and permanence to vivid imagery of death, murder, and fallen kingdoms in "Blue To White, " "Killer Surf Walker, " and finally "Gespenster, " which ends with an explosive 8 part harmony. Fenster's charm and inimitability comes in the form of collage; hungry to integrate their vision of the future with the sound of the past. Futuristic nostalgia with a lyrical bent towards the macabre world of dreams.

At the earlier show, touring in the aftermath of the low-key Wildlife album, Mott are facing up to the fact that they're doomed to remain a second-division attraction, adored by the faithful but unknown to the rest of the universe. A six-song set that opens with a Mountain cover and closes with Little Richard is excellent, of course, but nobody witnessing it (or hearing it without the benefit of hindsight) could ever imagine this band seriously transcending the beer-and-dandruff club circuit that had nurtured it so far. While his music is sometimes described as "post-minimalist, " Graham Fitkin himself mentions sources of inspiration as diverse as Stravinsky, Miles Davis, Webern, Steve Reich, Frank Sinatra and Pet Shop Boys. A talented pianist, he has written a number of works centered on the piano, in singular and in plural: his work list includes pieces for one to up to as many as six pianos. Partly it is the "black-and-white" nature of the instrument that attracts Fitkin - the fact that it forces the composer to articulate musical structures without hiding behind coloristic resources. The result is music that is often energetic and highly rhythmically driven.

(Vinyl LP with download card) Chelsea Crowell's second LP, Crystal City, takes some cues from her eponymous debut but delves much deeper into deeply personal songwriting and epic storytelling such as the title track.Crowell is the 2nd daughter of 3 between songwriting legends Rosanne Cash and Rodney Crowell. The craft is in her DNA and it shows. The only 3rd generation family member making music today, the shadows hang large over her but the music speaks for itself.Like her debut, Crystal City was recorded by Crowell herself and producer/partner, Loney John Hutchins. There are featured musicians as well - the Bakersfield twang of axeman Dave Gleason and drums from Nashville drummer Ben Martin, who has recorded with everyone from Will Oldham to Charlie Louvin.With tracks like I'm Gonna Freeze, Crystal City is a darker, harder hitting album than Crowell's self titled debut, but has softer moments like in Memories or Remind Me. The haunting nature of the instrumental For Stormy brings Santo and Johnny's Sleepwalk to mind. The two part Baptized songs drive home the very intimate, almost confessional tone to this album.
