The Rise and Fall of Modern Medicine

The Rise and Fall of Modern Medicine

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
In the years following World War II, medicine won major battles against smallpox, diphtheria, and polio. In the same period it also produced treatments to control the progress of Parkinson's, rheumatoid arthritis, and schizophrenia. It made realities of open-heart surgery, organ transplants, test-tube babies. Unquestionably, the medical accomplishments of the postwar years stand at the forefront of human endeavor, yet progress in recent decades has slowed nearly to a halt. In this winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, medical doctor and columnist James Le Fanu both surveys the glories of medicine in the postwar years and analyzes the factors that for the past twenty-five years have increasingly widened the gulf between achievement and advancement: the social theories of medicine, ethical issues, and political debates over health care that have hobbled the development of vaccines and discovery of new "miracle" cures. While fully demonstrating the extraordinary progress effected by medical research in the latter half of the twentieth century, Le Fanu also identifies the perils that confront medicine in the twenty-first. 16 pages of black-and-white photographs add to what the Los Angeles Times cited as "a sobering, contrarian challenge" to the "nostrum of medicine as a never-ending font of ‘miracle cures'." "[From] a respected science writer ... important information that ... has been overlooked or ignored by many physicians." —New Republic "Provocative and engrossing and informative." —Houston Chronicle "Marvelously written, meticulously researched ... one of the most thought-provoking and important works to appear in recent years." —Choice

Medicine and Care of the Dying A Modern History

Medicine and Care of the Dying: A Modern History

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
There is a growing conflict in medicine between the research imperative, with its implicit goal of overcoming death itself, and the re-emergent clinical imperative to treat death as a part of life, and to make the process of dying as tolerable as possible. Central to this conflict is the rise of scientific medicine and the decline of religious and associated moral discourses. Many of the Anglo Saxon countries are also marked by a moral and religious pluralism which breeds controversy over bioethical issues such as euthanasia. It seems that modern medicine has put the cure of bodies before the care of persons. Some scholars attribute this to a metaphysical heritage of dualism and reductionism. This heritage has become problematic in the modern age when waning belief in a divine order leaves the individual self as the bearer of meaning. At the same time, knowledge about nature and society has been increasing at such an accelerated pace, it has become even more difficult to develop a unified secular worldview. When the dying self contemplates its own disintegration in this context, the search for meaning may rest heavy indeed.Chapters one and two address these larger issues. Chapter three focuses on medicine's approach to cancer as a prime example of the strengths and weaknesses of the research imperative. Chapter four looks at the diffusion of the theory and practice of palliative care throughout the Anglo Saxon world. The fifth chapter discusses the development of effective pain control, essential to palliative care and one of modern medicine's unsung triumphs. The sixth chapter addresses the changing meaning of euthanasia in Western history in the past century, as it transitioned from a philosophical position to a widely-debated policy proposal. This book is for palliative care practitioners, and all health care professionals with an interest in end-of-life care. It is also for students in palliative care and the history of medicine, and for anyone interested in the history of this intriguing field.

A History of Military Medicine Vol II From the Renaissance Through Modern Times Contributions in Military Studies

A History of Military Medicine: Vol II: From the Renaissance Through Modern Times (Contributions in Military Studies)

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
Richard A. Gabriel and Karen S. Metz have completed this unique two-volume work: the first published comprehensive history of military medicine in the Western world. This second volume begins with the Renaissance, the occasion of the Western rebirth of the empirical habit of inquiry that made possible the eventual development of scientific medicine. The volume continues with studies of the increasingly sophisticated art of military medicine as it developed from the slaughter pens and amputations of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to the first effective medical care systems developed in the nineteenth century. The rise of modern military medicine in the twentieth century is then analyzed by Gabriel and Metz up until the close of the Vietnam War. Numerous instances of cross-national transfer of information and practices are reflected in the organization of the second volume, which still does not lose sight of the fact that, until very modern times, the various national efforts at providing military medical care remained essentially unique. Volume II concludes with an overview of the emergence of military medicine, a bibliography, and a general subject index. These volumes will be of considerable use to students and scholars alike in the disciplines of world history, military studies, and medical history. It is hoped that the Gabriel-Metz undertaking will stimulate an intensive re-examination of the course of military medical history.
