This LP from MCA's Jazz Heritage series of the early '80s mostly features the great Sidney Bechet as a sideman with Noble Sissle's large show band and on a small-group date under Sissle's sponsorship. Since these are Sissle's most jazz-oriented tracks and Bechet has plenty of solo space (particularly on "Roll on Mississippi, Roll On, " "Polka Dot Rag" and the combo sides), this music is worth acquiring in one form or another. As a bonus there are four performances from a 1938 blues date by singer Trixie Smith with Bechet and trumpeter Charlie Shavers. ~ Scott Yanow
