The Witch Doctor (Dumi Shongwe) curses Elizabeth, much to the concern of her husband Geoff (Andre Jacobs), who runs a family farming estate, and local doctor Pearson (Christopher Lee). Eager for revenge, the Witch Doctor calls up a demon from the sea which, over the course of a long afternoon and night, menaces Elizabeth and elderly neighbor Anthea Steed (Zoe Randall), while single-handedly killing Geoff, his foreman Mletch (Henry Cele), Cindy and her lover Robert (Gavin Hood). When Elizabeth kills the Witch Doctor in a sugar cane field fire, the demon is destroyed, but perhaps, as Pearson ponders the next morning, when he finds the monster's machete on the beach, it's only returned to the sea.Panga diligently captures bits and pieces of African culture, and its uncredited locations look authentic in Phillip Grosvenor's capable photography, much of it effectively shot night-for-night. The acting is a good cut above average, with veteran Christopher Lee adding dignity to the proceedings. The movie shares nothing but marketing chutzpah with its Ovidio Assonitis-produced predecessors: THE CURSE (1987), about a meteorite contaminating a rural water supply, causing mutations, and CURSE II: THE BITE (1989), in which a man turns into a giant snake.
