Fort Drum: The First 100 Years tells the story of how a dusty cavalry camp in the early 1900s evolved into a modern marvel of training and efficiency for soldiers of the United States Army.Created as a national training site by President Theodore Roosevelt, Pine Camp grew into Camp Drum and ultimately became Fort Drum. Today, the base is home to the 10th Mountain Division, a premier U.S. Army unit whose troops have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fort Drum is one of the largest and most well-equipped military installations in the Eastern part of the United States. It is the economic engine of Northern New York and introduced cultural diversity into a previously isolated region. Over the course of a century, soldiers who trained at the legendary base have shaped the history of America and the world. 90 Minutes / 2012Some of the individuals featured in the film include Frederick Grant son of President Ulysses Grant who was commander of the soldiers training at the site in the early 1900s. Another personality from the base s history was an eccentric peddler known as Huckleberry Charlie, who could be heard selling his wares. We pick em with a silver spoon and we don t pick em til they re ripe. In 1935, General Douglas Macarthur was the driving force behind the training of 36, 000 soldiers at the base. Among the soldiers who trained at the military post was a young cartoonist named Bill Mauldin. It was at Pine Camp in the 1940s that Mauldin s skills developed as he worked for the Division newspaper. Mauldin went on to win two Pulitzer Prizes, the highest of journalism awards. His political cartoons were printed internationally from the 1950s until his retirement in 1991. Of course another noteworthy character was General Hugh Drum the namesake of the base who ordered the enlargement of Pine Camp in 1940 to house a division-sized unit. This journey includes the story of the Lost Villages. In the 1940s, the Army base added 84 thousand additional acres. Many nearby villages and farms found them-selves located inside the maneuver range. The federal government informed area residents that they would need to move. The government ultimately employed the larg-est use of eminent domain in New York State history to take the land. The locals had no choice in the matter. Nearly 2, 000 people, whose families had lived on the land for generations, lost their homes and businesses. More than 3, 000 buildings, 24 schools, 6 churches and a post office were abandoned. Entire hamlets and villages, including, LeRaysville, Sterlingville, Wood s Mills, Lewisburg, Alpina and North Wilna, were erased off the map. Another event featured in the documentary took place in 1917 when the largest horse-stampede in Army history took place at Pine Camp. Four-hundred horses broke free and terrorized the surrounding community. Many stampeded through the public square in the nearby city of Watertown NY.
