The Fly River Papua New Guinea Volume 9 Environmental Studies in an Impacted Tropical River System Developments in Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Fly River, Papua New Guinea, Volume 9: Environmental Studies in an Impacted Tropical River System (Developments in Earth and Environmental Sciences)

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
The Fly River and its tributaries, the Ok Tedi and Strickland rivers, are located in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. All three rivers have their source in the rugged central mountain range of the island and eventually flow, via the Fly River delta, into the Gulf of Papua to the north of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. With a catchment area still largely covered by tropical rainforest and relatively few human inhabitants, this remote part of Papua New Guinea presents a rare opportunity to document and understand the dynamics of a large tropical river system largely unaffected by human activity. In 1984 the Ok Tedi Mining Company Limited began mining copper and gold mineralisation from Mt. Fubilan, which is located at the headwaters of the Ok Tedi. In 1990, mining begin at the Porgera gold mine located at the headwaters of the Strickland River. Since that time both companies have intensely monitored the environment of the Fly River system in order to better understand the possible impact of mining. This book is intended to assemble and summarise this vast amount of information, much of it contained in internal company reports, to better understand the environmental complexity and dynamics of this large and relatively undisturbed tropical river system. The approach to be taken in achieving this outcome is to solicit contributions summarising each of the scientific disciplines to be covered from recognised experts with experience in the region. * documents physical and biologic change in a large tropical river system brought about largely by mining in an otherwise pristine environment.* this book brings together a broad rand of disciplines to provide a comprehensive overview of change in a complex and dynamical tropical river system based largely on previously unpublished company reports.* the book provides examples of state-of-the-art strategies and methodologies for monitoring environmental impact in a large river system.

State and Society in Papua New Guinea The First Twenty-Five Years

State and Society in Papua New Guinea: The First Twenty-Five Years

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
On the eve of Papua New Guinea's independence in 1975 there were many – both within the country and outside – who predicted political anarchy, with the possibility of an army coup or authoritarian single-party dominance, and economic collapse. Such fears appeared to have been justified when in 1975 both the North Solomons (Bougainville) and Papua unilaterally declared their independence. In fact, however, PNG achieved a smooth transition, and in its first decade as a new state enjoyed a high degree of political and economic progress. It remains one of the few post-colonial states that has maintained an unbroken record of democratic government. Nevertheless, from around the mid-1980s a number of problems have become apparent, including: a decline in government capability; increasing problems of urban and rural lawlessness; poor economic management, with growing evidence of nepotism and corruption; environmental degradation associated with mining and logging, and increasing pressure on land; and, from 1988, a rebellion on Bougainville. This volume brings together a number of papers written by the author between 1971 and 2001 which address issues of political and economic development and social change in Papua New Guinea. Dr R.J. May is a senior fellow in the Department of Political and Social Change, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at The Australian National University. He was formerly a senior economist with the Reserve Bank of Australia and later foundation director of IASER in PNG (now the National Research Institute). In 1976 he was awarded the Independence Medal for his services to banking and research in PNG.

Village on the Edge Changing Times in Papua New Guinea

Village on the Edge: Changing Times in Papua New Guinea

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Kragur village lies on the rugged north shore of Kairiru, a steep volcanic island just off the north coast of Papua New Guinea. In 1998 the village looked much as it had some twenty-two years earlier when author Michael French Smith first visited. But he soon found that changing circumstances were shaking things up. Village on the Edge weaves together the story of Kragur villagers' struggle to find their own path toward the future with the story of Papua New Guinea's travails in the post-independence era. Smith writes of his own experiences as well, living and working in Papua New Guinea and trying to understand the complexities of an unfamiliar way of life. To tell all these stories, he delves into ghosts, magic, myths, ancestors, bookkeeping, tourism, the World Bank, the Holy Spirit, and the meaning of progress and development. Village on the Edge draws on the insights of cultural anthropology but is written for anyone interested in Papua New Guinea. "In Village on the Edge, Michael French Smith provides the reader with something rare and precious--a humane and sharply insightful view into the rich local world of a village in transition in Papua New Guinea." --- Bruce Beehler, Conservation International "Michael French Smith spins a great yarn. He has an admirable ability to translate personal experiences into a meaningful message and can describe complex social phenomena in ways that the anthropologically uninitiated can understand and appreciate. I finished this book in just a few sittings and thoroughly enjoyed it." --- Richard Scaglion, University of Pittsburgh "Michael French Smith's Village on the Edge is a heartfelt and perceptive account of a people facing enormous change. In essence, although this book concerns the people of Kragur Village, it tells the story of all of contemporary Melanesia. It is a unique work, elucidating a unique period of change among an extraordinary people." --- Tim Flannery, author of Throwim Way Leg: Tree Kangaroos, Possums and Penis Gourds

The Traditional Pottery of Papua New Guinea

The Traditional Pottery of Papua New Guinea

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
This book is the most comprehensive and authoritative survey ever produced of the traditional pottery of Papua New Guinea. The authors have made a thorough analysis of pottery-making throughout Papua New Guinea, based on eight years of fieldwork. They proffer a first-hand account of clay preparation, pottery formation, and firing techniques, interwoven with information on the functions of the pottery and the various approaches to decoration. Particular types of pottery have been identified by analyzing some of the clays and by studying the pottery in terms of different language divisions, which tend to correlate with different pottery styles. The book contains detailed descriptions of the pottery based not only on personal observation, but also on a meticulous collection of photographs from the villages of Papua New Guinea, private collections, and museum collections throughout the world. Besides providing fascinating descriptions of personal contact with traditional potmakers and legends about the origins of the clay and potmaking, The Traditional Pottery of Papua New Guinea makes a serious contribution to the study of the country's history and culture in its documentation of pottery exchange routes and the cultural importance of pottery. Reviews of previous historical and anthropological information are also incorporated.

Public Health In Papua Guinea Medical Possibility

Public Health In Papua Guinea: Medical Possibility

Earn 2% eBay Bucks on qualifying purchases! Backed by eBay Buyer Protection Program. Terms and Conditions apply. (In-Stock)
This book concerns the development of institutional medicine, medical practice and health care during the initial colonisation and later colonial rule of Papua New Guinea. It discusses the relationship between public health and the medical profession and colonial bureaucracy, and also analyses the profession's social and technical ideas which determined the kinds of health policies and programmes attempted. The first part describes the era of tropical medicine which predominated at the turn of the century and survived until the 1950s. The second part investigates the transformation of tropical medicine by the introduction of new drugs and the curative campaigns of the 1950s and 1960s, and thereafter discusses the emergence of a new medical strategy known as 'primary health care'. This original, comparative study will be of value not only to anthropologists and historians of tropical medicine but also to historians of colonialism and its effects on public health care.
