This fifth and final volume of The Papers of Will Rogers traces the career of Oklahoma’s beloved entertainer during his most popular years and extends beyond his death in 1935.By 1928, the Oklahoma humorist and commentator had reached national prominence through his newspaper columns, silent films, sound recordings, books, philanthropic endeavors, and lecture tours. His fame, fortune, and influence, however, had yet to crest. This volume showcases a wide variety of documents, including correspondence with some of the most significant figures of the day, revealing Rogers’s rise to fame as the nation’s leading social and political commentator and as a hugely popular star of radio, stage, and film.Rogers’s multifaceted career ended abruptly when he and the famous aviator Wylie Post died in an airplane crash in northernmost Alaska. This documentary history of his final years includes transcripts of radio broadcasts, contracts, and business documents, as well as nearly two hundred telegrams and letters to family, friends, and notable public figures—the majority of which have never before been published. It also covers the aftermath of his fatal airplane accident: the certificate of death, a first-person account of his funeral, settlement of his estate, efforts to pay tribute to his memory, and unauthorized attempts to capitalize on his fame.

Now in its fifth edition, Diffusion of Innovations is a classic work on the spread of new ideas. It has sold 30, 000 copies in each edition and will continue to reach a huge academic audience. In this renowned book, Everett M. Rogers, professor and chair of the Department of Communication & Journalism at the University of New Mexico, explains how new ideas spread via communication channels over time. Such innovations are initially perceived as uncertain and even risky. To overcome this uncertainty, most people seek out others like themselves who have already adopted the new idea. Thus the diffusion process consists of a few individuals who first adopt an innovation, then spread the word among their circle of acquaintances--a process which typically takes months or years. But there are exceptions: use of the Internet in the 1990s, for example, may have spread more rapidly than any other innovation in the history of humankind. Will Rogers

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Of the many books written about Will Rogers, none can have the immediacy, firsthand knowledge, and personal perspective of this account by his wife, Betty Blake Rogers. Her story is of Will Rogers, from wayward youth to international celebrity. Will was born in 1879 in the Cherokee nation of Indian Territory, near what is now Oologah, and died in 1935 with Wiley Post in an airplane crash in Alaska. The period witnessed the passing of the frontier and the arrival of the air age, and Will Rogers became a unique part and interpreter of it all."The book offers a ’unique insight’ into the Oklahoma cowboy who became a worldwide celebrity. Betty Rogers understood Will as no one else could, and her book amplifies the importance of a homegrown philosopher who captured the spirit of the American experience. Cowboy, showman, homespun pundit-Will left his mark in many ways, each of which is carefully developed in the book’s twenty-two chapters. Most notable, however, is Mrs. Rogers’s treatment of her husband’s character. Behind the facade lay a complex man who, despite his lack of formal education, had a grasp of modern psychology and world politics. Equally at home with cowboys and presidents, Will accepted both as human beings engaged in the larger arena of life, whether in the wide open spaces of Oklahoma or the confines of Washington....For those who would know Will Rogers in a familiar way, there is no better book than this reprint." Arizona and the West."The best of all the books on the best of all the homespun philosophers as seen through the eyes of his wife." Midwest Book Review."Folksy, detailed and loving, it offers a timeless glimpse at a real American hero of his time-and ours." American Way.

Furthermore, the Internet is changing the very nature of diffusion by decreasing the importance of physical distance between people. The fifth edition addresses the spread of the Internet, and how it has transformed the way human beings communicate and adopt new ideas.

Measuring the Flow of Time The Works of James A. Ford 1935-1941 Classics Southeast Archaeology

Measuring the Flow of Time: The Works of James A. Ford, 1935-1941 (Classics Southeast Archaeology)

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
A Dan Josselyn Memorial Publication This collection of Ford's works focuses on the development of ceramic chronology—a key tool in Americanist archaeology.  When James Ford began archaeological fieldwork in 1927, scholars divided time simply into prehistory and history. Though certainly influenced by his colleagues, Ford devoted his life to establishing a chronology for prehistory based on ceramic types, and today he deserves credit for bringing chronological order to the vast archaeological record of the Mississippi Valley.  This book collects Ford's seminal writings showing the importance of pottery styles in dating sites, population movements, and cultures. These works defined the development of ceramic chronology that culminated in the major volume Archaeological Survey in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, 1940-1947, which Ford wrote with Philip Phillips and James B. Griffin. In addition to Ford's early writings, the collection includes articles written with Griffin and Gordon Willey, as well as other key papers by Henry Collins and Fred Kniffen.  Editors Michael O'Brien and Lee Lyman have written an introduction that sets the stage for each chapter and provides a cohesive framework from which to examine Ford's ideas. A foreword by Willey, himself a participant in this chronology development, looks back on the origin of that method. Measuring the Flow of Time traces the development of culture history in American archaeology by providing a single reference for all of Ford's writing on chronology. It chronicles the formation of one of the most important tools for understanding the prehistory of North America and shows its lasting relevance.

San Jose and Other Famous Places

San Jose and Other Famous Places

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Welcome to the Memorial Edition of SAN JOSE and OTHER FAMOUS PLACES~ the Lore and Lure of the South Bay ~ By Veteran Newsman and Long-Time Political Editor of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, Harry G. Farrell. Follow Harry as he witnesses the growth and development of that "other place, " San Jose, the toddling town with an "inferiority complex" that grew up in the shadow of its big brother to the north, San Francisco, to become one of the most influential communities in California. Farrell's chronicle stretches from the old neighborhoods - Goosetown, Tar Flat, College Park, Hyde Park, Robertsville, Meridian Corners - to the surge of Silicon Valley, and is peopled with heroes, knaves, cops, robbers, eccentrics and celebrities. Among the most respected and popular news personalities in the Golden State, Harry Farrell moved in the circles of the greatest names in the 20th century, hob-nobbing with presidents, rubbing elbows with celebrities. Keeping his homegrown perspective, he garnered a devoted readership who still speak of him adoringly. SAN JOSE and OTHER FAMOUS PLACES is as much Harry's story, as the story of a city. The adventures and misadventures of a go-getter reporter intertwine with the psychology and ambiance of a unique place, as he and the city cope with the comings and goings of the likes of Richard Nixon, Eldridge Cleaver, and Robert Kennedy. Ride with him as he leads a presidential motorcade on a high-speed chase through the Santa Cruz mountains; listen in as he fields phone messages from a news tipster who claims to get her scoops "straight from God, " or as he and Pierre Salinger chat with a political unknown, John Kennedy. Forty years of chronicling the story of San Jose earned him the privilege, in 1983, of producing this book for the San Jose Historical Museum Association. Nobody could have done it better. This Memorial Edition will fill a void on the shelves and in the hearts of those who love all things Californian.
