Tying Greece to the West: US-West German-Greek Relations 1949-74 examines the reconstruction of Greece in the post-war era and how the Greek foreign economic and political relations with the United States and West Germany developed—especially the Greek-West German trade and the American and West German financial and aid policy. Furthermore, it investigates what impact Greek foreign relations had on the domestic development, particularly in relation to the establishment of the dictatorship in 1967—the so-called Colonels Regime. The Second World War disrupted the Greek economy, polarized politics and left Greece in a state of severe economic and social disorder. The Axis occupation was followed by civil war with devastating consequences and the Greek Civil War was one immediate reason for the declaration of the Truman Doctrine in 1947. The Truman Doctrine made Greece subject to the most costly overseas American aid program ever in peace time. However, gradually, West Germany became the backbone in Greece's foreign economic relations. In this way, West Germany also took over a number of the policy goals which Washington had formulated since the declaration of the Truman Doctrine in 1947. The Marshall Plan years were formative in this process which culminated during almost three years of protracted negotiations when West Germany was the driving force in Greece becoming the first associate member of EEC in 1962.

In writing this book on the plays of New Comedy the author's aim is to fill a gap in the existing literature by concentrating on what one might look for in watching and reading these plays and why such an exercise might be pleasurable. The social comedy of Menander, Plautus and Terence provided a style of comic drama which was to prove the root of all subsequent western comedy. Dr Hunter gives a literary account of this drama, placing it in its ancient context and then ranging over a number of specific topics and themes: the dramatic craft of the poets, their exploration of how to give variety to stereotyped plots and characters, the presentation of women, the use of language and themes from tragedy, the place of moralising and philosophy. All Greek and Latin is translated.

In the 5th century B.C., Greece was a patchwork country of small, independent city-states whose tendency to fight each other was offset only by strong ties to common cultural elements such as language and a unique style of warfare. While surviving myths emphasize heroics and honor, the reality of ancient Greek warfare was that of regular men dealing with everyday problems. Relying heavily on primary sources such as Herodotus, Thucydides and Plutarch, this volume provides the first-ever tactical level survey of all 173 Greek land engagements which occurred during the 5th century B.C., a seminal period in the history of western warfare. Using carefully researched logical probabilities to extend surviving records, the author places each battle within its historical context and analyzes it with a view to documenting significant overall patterns of action. The result is not only a detailed study of each battle complete with maps and battlefield diagrams, but also an overview of general trends in 5th century Greek warfare.

State of Israel Coins Akko - Silver Proof Coin

Over 50,000 items with Free Shipping! (In-Stock)
The Bank of Israel has chosen the new Akko coin with which to open both the year 2010 and the new decade. Akko richly deserves to be included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites worthy of preservation inasmuch as this 4 000 year old port city jutting into the blue waters of the Mediterranean on Israel s northern coast is a unique and priceless jewel. UNESCO s designation of Akko states that the exceptional history of the city is reflected in the fact that its well preserved Crusader subterranean city dating from the Middle Ages atop which is the Islamic fortress city of Ottoman times (18th-19th centuries) presents a priceless picture and testament of how ancient cities were planned and constructed and how later cities were built emerging from and on top of the older ones. This is exemplified as well in the layered archaeological findings of Jerusalem and each city teaches us about the other one. It is interesting to note that the Crusader city with Byzantine and Roman remnants was discovered in the 1960 s when municipal development necessitated the construction of a modern sewer system. Akko incorporates and encapsulates the entire history and archaeology of the Land of Israel from Biblical times even before King Solomon through the Greeks and Romans the Byzantines the Crusaders the Ottomon Moslems Napoleon the British and finally the fledgling State of Israel (as depicted in the famous film Exodus with its dramatic prison escape from Acre s moated fortress). Akko (Acre) is also a microcosm of modern Israel where Jews and Arabs live work and interact together in normalcy which is enviable throughout the Middle East and boasts a thriving population of some 47 000. It is a tourist mecca as well and its beauty can be seen on this coin which portrays on its obverse the ancient fortress walls with the famous Khan-el-Umdan caravanseraie and its clock tower erected to celebrate the 25th year of the reign of the notorious Ottoman Butcher of Acre Sultan Suleiman Abdul Hami

This collective study examines the transformation (metamorphosis) that Greece has experienced over the course of the 20th century by exploring its gradual evolution into a consolidated democracy, an advanced economy in the Eurozone and a balanced partner in the EU and NATO promoting a stabilizing role in southeastern Europe. The book examines the variables contributing to the profiling of contemporary Greece, emphasizing the conceptual inertia bedevilling the studies of Greece in recent years by focusing on the elements that indicated the slow pace in the country's modernization. In conclusion, there is a need for Greece's constant commitment to functional adjustments regarding the country's economic, political and strategic priorities in order to promote effectively the role of regional stabilizer acting in concert with NATO and EU partners.
