Greeks on the Black Sea Ancient Art from the Hermitage J. Paul Getty Museum

Greeks on the Black Sea: Ancient Art from the Hermitage (J. Paul Getty Museum)

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
The ancient Greeks traveled widely by sea and founded colonies in far-flung locations. On the north coast of the Black Sea were a number of such Greek settlements, places where the Greeks made contact with the local Scythian population. Greek goods were traded extensively throughout the region, and many of these often-luxurious articles eventually made their way into tombs. From its wealth of such Greek finds from the Black Sea, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg has lent some 175 Greek objects to an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa. This richly illustrated catalogue to the exhibition presents nine essays on the archaeology of the northern Black Sea region and its history, culture, and art, including sculpture, pottery, gems, and jewelry. Written by curators at the State Hermitage Museum, Greeks on the Black Sea presents an intriguing world at once Greek and barbarian.

Greek Gold From The Treasure Rooms Of The Hermitage

Greek Gold: From The Treasure Rooms Of The Hermitage

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
In the first half of the nineteenth century, remarkable finds were made in burial mounds on the north coast of the Black Sea: Greek vases, wooden sarcophagi and a great deal of gold. The jewellery was associated with the elaborate funerary rites in the local settlements, and has been dated to between the 7th and the 1st centuries BC. The gold jewellery placed on or near the deceased proved to have been exceptionally well preserved - from fragile olive wreaths to beautiful ear pendants, necklaces and ornaments to be worn on the head. These pieces were given a place in the treasure rooms of the Winter Palace, now the State Hermitage Museum, in St Petersburg. This book presents the highlights from this collection for the first time, discussing the archaelogical survey which took place in the Northern Black Sea region in the nineteenth century, the history of the ancient Greek settlers of the Northern Black Sea coast, their technique of making jewellery, and the various different cultural centres and burial sites in the Northern Black Sea region. It is illustrated in full-colour throughout with stunning reproductions of these exquisite pieces of Greek gold.

Georgia In the Mountains of Poetry Caucasus World Peoples of the Caucasus

Georgia: In the Mountains of Poetry (Caucasus World: Peoples of the Caucasus)

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
This is the first comprehensive cultural and historical introduction to modern Georgia. It covers the country region by region, taking the form of a literary journey through the transition from Soviet Georgia to the modern independent nation state. Georgia's recorded history goes back nearly 3, 000 years. The Georgians converted to Christianity in 330 and their Bagratuni monarchy endured for over 1, 000 years. The Soviets ruled the region from 1921 but their vigorous repression did little to eradicate the strong Georgian sense of nationhood and under Gorbachev, Georgian independence became inevitable. Nasmyth's lively and topical survey charts the nation's remarkable cultural and historical journey to statehood. Having travelled extensively in the country over a period of five years, Peter Nasmyth is exceptionally qualified to write on Georgia. His authoritative, dynamic and perceptive book is based on hundreds of interviews with modern Georgians, from country priests to black marketeers. Georgia will be essential reading for anyone interested in this fascinating region as well as for students and researchers requiring an insight into life after the collapse of the old Soviet order in the richest and most dramatic of the former republics.

A Small Corner of Hell Dispatches from Chechnya

A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
Chechnya, a 6, 000-square-mile corner of the northern Caucasus, has struggled under Russian domination for centuries. The region declared its independence in 1991, leading to a brutal war, Russian withdrawal, and subsequent "governance" by bandits and warlords. A series of apartment building attacks in Moscow in 1999, allegedly orchestrated by a rebel faction, reignited the war, which continues to rage today. Russia has gone to great lengths to keep journalists from reporting on the conflict; consequently, few people outside the region understand its scale and the atrocities—described by eyewitnesses as comparable to those discovered in Bosnia—committed there.Anna Politkovskaya, a correspondent for the liberal Moscow newspaper Novaya gazeta, was the only journalist to have constant access to the region. Her international stature and reputation for honesty among the Chechens allowed her to continue to report to the world the brutal tactics of Russia's leaders used to quell the uprisings. A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya is her second book on this bloody and prolonged war. More than a collection of articles and columns, A Small Corner of Hell offers a rare insider's view of life in Chechnya over the past years. Centered on stories of those caught-literally-in the crossfire of the conflict, her book recounts the horrors of living in the midst of the war, examines how the war has affected Russian society, and takes a hard look at how people on both sides are profiting from it, from the guards who accept bribes from Chechens out after curfew to the United Nations. Politkovskaya's unflinching honesty and her courage in speaking truth to power combine here to produce a powerful account of what is acknowledged as one of the most dangerous and least understood conflicts on the planet. Anna Politkovskaya was assassinated in Moscow on October 7, 2006. "The murder of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya leaves a terrible silence in Russia and an information void about a dark realm that we need to know more about. No one else reported as she did on the Russian north Caucasus and the abuse of human rights there. Her reports made for difficult reading—and Politkovskaya only got where she did by being one of life's difficult people."—Thomas de Waal, Guardian
