Plot: Two of Italy's greatest film stars, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, are united in this special film about two special people. The day is May 8, 1939, the day of a huge rally celebrating Hitler's visit to Rome which underscored the infamous alliance between the Nazis and Mussolini's fascist regime. But this serves only as a background to the story on which the film focuses: a somewhat different alliance transpiring this same day. In this brief encounter, an intimate drama unfolds between two unlikely people, Antonietta (Sophia Loren), a worn out and weary housewife, and Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni), a former radio announcer.

The film is set during the late 1930s: the occasion is the first meeting between Mussolini and Hitler. Left alone in her tenement home when her fascist husband runs off to attend the historic event, Sophia Loren strikes up a friendship with her homosexual neighbor Mastroianni. As the day segues into night, Loreon and Mastroianni develop a very special relationship that will radically alter both of their outlooks on life.

Plot summary: An evening at an Italian restaurant. Hosted by tolerant and relaxed Flora, various parties of middle-class people come in -- large and small, young and old, regulars and tourists, married and single -- to dine, converse, argue, celebrate, make confessions; to overhear other people's discussions, to interrupt them, to sing, listen to music, and enjoy life. The camera, just like the people, moves constantly from table to table, into the kitchen and the back room to observe the staff's petty jealousies and frustrations -- until two hours later it's time for everybody to go home.
