This garden landscape shows a path leading through a mysterious garden whose leaves and flowers take the abstract shapes of the artists imagination. The chickens, painted against a background bearing overtones of the colors found in the garden, occupy the visual center of this path, where the eye is led into the heart of this magical realm. Garden Path with Chickens was done in the style of Art Nouveau, a French movement that developed in the last years of the nineteenth century. Gustav Klimts interest in Art Nouveau can be seen in the way that nature seems to engulf the entire painting. Visually there is no way out of this realm. It is as if the viewer is taken to another place not of this earth. The chickens for that matter appear as engrossed with the scenery as the viewer might be, for the garden rises all around and leads only into an even thicker center where the path disappears. Notice the endless pattern of swirls and circles appearing in the flowered garden and the pattern of gigantic leaves. Garden Path with Chickens, it could be argued, might altogether be a symbolic reference to a femme fatale fantasy so often suggested in Klimts work. The chickens, a metaphor for a bewildered man appear lost and dominated by the surrounding mass of mother nature. As they walk further into her seemingly fertile bosom there is no indication that they will ever walk out again.

This Austrian landscape depicts a house on the shores of lake Attersee in Austria. Kammer SullAttersee is indicative of Art Nouveau, a style that developed in the last years of the nineteenth century and involved Gustav Klimts leadership in the Viennese Secession where he was named President. The Viennese Secession marked the removal of a group of artists from the Association of Austrian Artists. The evidence of this painting belonging to the Art Nouveau school occurs in the prevalence of green vegetation surrounding the house which seems to be engulfed by it. It was created to act as an oasis for the viewer to escape into a world of mystical qualities where aesthetic beauty mixed with symbolic reference. Though Klimt was a symbolic painter it is important to keep in mind that this term refers to symbols personal to the nature of the artist. Therefore, symbols are not universal and are intended to take on a new meaning to the viewer. This house might mean something different to anyone who should gazes upon it. This takes into account the uniquely personal experience that art can be and also the point that art does not have to be anything other than art. Notice also the relationship that color has in this painting. The complimentary tones of green and beige play off of each other and interact calmly with the brown roof adorning the building.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, frequently referred to as just Steinlen (November 10, 1859 - December 13, 1923), was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his new wife were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises. In the early 1890s, Steinlen's paintings of rural landscapes, flowers, and nudes were being shown at the Salon des Indépendants. His 1895 lithograph titled Les Chanteurs des Rues was the frontispiece to a work entitled Chansons de Montmartre published by Éditions Flammarion with sixteen original lithographs that illustrated the Belle Epoque songs of Paul Delmet. Steinlen became a regular contributor to Le Rire and Gil Blas magazines plus numerous other publications. Between 1883 and 1920, he produced hundreds of illustrations, a number of which were done under a pseudonym so as to avoid political problems due to their harsh criticisms of societal ills. Théophile Steinlen died in 1923 in Paris. Today, his works can be found at many important museums around the world including at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., United States.
