In 1999, the cows stopped traffic all over Chicago. In 2000, the cows took over New York. Now for 2001, the cows are heading back West. Introducing CowParade Kansas City, a companion book that will keep the cows and their civic pride around long after the summer's events are over. As with every CowParade, the sculptures in CowParade Kansas City are totally original, created by local artists and sponsored by local businesses. Each city mounts a street- and plaza-side display of approximately 300 cows, every one of which is featured in full-color in the book. Each cow-from Kansas City's 18th& Bovine to it's Barbecue Bull, will be labeled with the artist, the sponsor, and the cow's location. Since its first staging in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1998, CowParade has been hugely successful in each of its host cities. Post-parade auctions of the sculptures generated $3.5 million in Chicago and $4 million in New York. Proceeds from Kansas City's CowParade will benefit local youth education programs.

In the mid 1970s, Larry McPherson made a series of photographs of cows grazing at a Midwestern farm, in the natural oak savannahs on the Illinois-Wisconsin border. The images, some made in daytime and some at night, capture a range of bovine activities and moods, and a classic landscape. They became the subject of a solo exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago and traveled with several group shows. Thirty years later, this distinctive and insightful series is in book form for the first time. In the interim, McPherson, born in Newark, Ohio, in 1943, has published two other photographic books, Memphis and Beirut City Center, received two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships and a Guggenheim fellowship, and has seen his work acquired for many public collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
