Mad Mission is the beginning of a series of films from Hong Kong that I am amazed isn't more popular with Asian cinema lovers here in a America. The series is better known as Aces Go Places in the rest of the world and this film was so popular in Asia that it inspired four sequels. The reason is due to the wonderful combination of action, espionage, comedy and wild stunts that highly resembles early 80's Jackie Chan movies. Those Jackie Chan movies are popular here in America but not Mad Mission? It's not that Asian cinema lovers don't like them, it's because that they haven't heard of them or if they have, they just haven't seen them as they are quite hard to locate especially since the Anchor Bay box set of the first four films has been out-of-print for years. I hope to help change that. The film opens with a wild diamond robbery where notorious thief "King Kong" crashes through a high-rise window and escapes with diamonds while on a motorcycle. A bald cop from America is teamed up with a hard ass Hong Kong women to crack the case but later on they must team up with King Kong to find the diamonds as his partner has been killed and the crime lords that he stole the diamonds from and are closing down him fast. Lots of funny hijinx and amazing stunts ensue. People that have seen this film usually first talk about the amazing stunts and this film is loaded to the brim with them! It seems like the entire film is one big stunt. I was disappointed in some of the stunts as there are a few that look a little too staged but that didn't hurt the entertainment value. Beyond the stunts though I have to say the film is perfectly cast. Cantonese pop star Samuel Hui plays King Kong and he really looks like a taller Jackie Chan with a smaller schnozz and like Chan he does some pretty good stunt work. Karl Maka and Sylvia Chan are also wonderful in their cop roles.

The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend about the tragic romance between two lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, or Liang Zhu, from whom the name of the legend is known in Chinese. The story is set in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Zhu Yingtai is an intelligent but lazy girl who is born into a wealthy family. She was to be married off to the son of the Prime Minister, but her parents found that she was unable to recite poetry or play the guzheng (a minimum requirement for girls born of nobility). Her mother thus sent her to a college disguised as a boy. Now when Yingtai is enrolled in the college, she is given certain special privileges by the principal's wife who knew her mother (her mother studied there). This was because, Yingtai had sworn 3 oaths before entering the college (see the film for those). Yingtai met Liang ShanBo, an industrious but poor man who was studying to sit for the national exam. (In those days, to become an official, you had to sit for a national exam, these were based on poetry, the teachings of Confuscious, etc). They developed a strong bond (which causes Shan Bo to feel that he might be homosexual) with each other, and Liang ShanBo did not realise that YingTai was a girl, till the fateful meeting with his ex-classmate who had become a monk. It turns his ex-classmate was Yingtai's mother's former lover, and she gave him up so that she could marry a rich and powerful official. Yingtai's father called her back after 6 months so that they could arrange the wedding with the son of the Prime Minister, but before she sets off, she asks his classmate, Ting Mong Chun to pass a message to Shan Bo that she had to leave. They met again, and in the Goddess of Mercy cave, she chose to be his better half. The story ends in tragedy, because both lovers could not be together in life, but in death they were side by side. The comic elements in the show help to ease the sad endings, but when it comes to the end, grab your Kleenex tissues.

A life-affirming and genuinely heart-warming drama, Lost and Found has the kind of storyline that one hesitates to relate to friends for fear they will dismiss the movie out of turn, particularly as it sounds like an imitation of C'est La Vie, Mon Cheri. It is definitely more than that and ranks among the United Filmmakers Organization's best productions to date. 23 year-old woman Chai Lam has been diagnosed with leukaemia and is given only a 30% chance of recovery. One day she sees a man fishing a wallet out of a garbage can. He turns out to be a Mongolia-born "lost and found" expert whose name translates into Cantonese as "That Worm." A gregarious sort, Worm (who knows nothing about Lam's condition) tackles the woman's request that he find Eurasian sailor Ted, whom she last saw four days ago. She has become interested in Ted and his home, the Scottish island of St. Kilda, which consists mostly of graveyards. When her rather cold and distant father refuses to allow her to continue working, Lam throws away her medication and decides that she would like to visit the island, which is known as "The Edge of the World." She and Worm are eventually able to track Ted down just as he is about to fly back home and take over running the family inn. Before she accepts Ted's invitation to visit him on St. Kilda, Lam helps Worm to try and grant the wish of a young girl, whose mother is in the hospital and on the verge of death. Lam's terminal illness can be interpreted as a metaphor for the countdown to the July 1, 1997 reunification, with all of the uncertainty that date posed for HK's citizens, and Lost and Found is primarily about life, love, and identity. Depending on how receptive you have been to everything preceding it, the final sequence just might reduce you to tears, but it is a good cry in both senses of the term.

US Compatible -Champion competitive marksman Ken comes across an armored van robbery. He sees a policeman held hostage and shoots and kills four of the robbers. One of the robbers escapes and the policeman survives. The case is handled by Jerry Chang, whom Ken knows from having recently beaten him in a shooting match. Ken is found not guilty in court.
