Unearthing Francos Legacy Mass Graves and the Recovery of Historical Memory in Spain ND Contemporary European Politics

Unearthing Franco's Legacy: Mass Graves and the Recovery of Historical Memory in Spain (ND Contemporary European Politics)

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Unearthing Franco's Legacy: Mass Graves and the Recovery of Historical Memory in Spain addresses the political, cultural, and historical debate that has ensued in Spain as a result of the recent discovery and exhumation of mass graves dating from the years during and after the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). The victor, General Francisco Franco, ruled as a dictator for thirty-six years, during which time he and his supporters had thousands of political dissidents or suspects and their families systematically killed and buried in anonymous mass graves. Although Spaniards living near the burial sites realized what was happening, the conspiracy of silence imposed by the Franco regime continued for many years after his death in 1975 and after the establishment of a democratic government. While the people of Germany, France, and Italy have confronted the legacies of the repressive regimes that came to power in those countries during the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, the unearthing of the anonymous dead in Spain has focused attention on how Spaniards have only recently begun to revisit their past and publicly confront Franco's legacy. The essays by historians, anthropologists, literary scholars, journalists, and cultural analysts gathered here represent the first interdisciplinary analysis of how present-day Spain has sought to come to terms with the violence of Franco's regime. Their contributions comprise an important example of how a culture critiques itself while mining its collective memory. "For anyone interested in understanding the lasting impact of the Spanish Civil War on contemporary society, Unearthing Franco's Legacy is required reading. The editors of this book have brought together, and placed in constructive dialogue, a comprehensive group of international authors whose contributions result in a sweeping and devastating account of the war's deep wounds on individual lives and collective histories. Meticulously studying Franco's policies, their impact on the war's victims, and representations of the war's stories, both those unearthed and others that continue to be buried, this book makes terribly clear that the Spanish Civil War and its memory continue to teach us lessons about the responsibility of scholarship in deciphering the complexities of the past." --Jordana Mendelson, New York University "Unearthing Franco's Legacy is a timely contribution to a subject that has provoked serious discussion both in Spain and abroad. The scholars and practitioners whose work is represented in this volume address the issue of historical memory from different disciplinary angles, and the interdisciplinarity of the approaches adds much to the book's value and to the debates that persist regarding this topic." -- David T. Gies, Commonwealth Professor of Spanish, University of Virginia

Francos International Brigades Foreign Volunteers and Fascist Dictators in the Spanish Civil War

Franco's International Brigades: Foreign Volunteers and Fascist Dictators in the Spanish Civil War

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Ninety thousand foreign volunteers fought for Franco in the Spanish Civil War, but until now their story has never been told. They were an unlikely collection of men and women: American adventurers and British aristocrats, Peruvian poets, Finnish film stars, debout Irish Catholics, White Russians, Romanian fascists, French monarchists, and Moroccan nationalists. Fighting alongside them were fifteen thousand German and seventy thousand Italian soldiers. Using memoirs, interviews, and archives, Christopher Othen paints a picture of a continent on the brink of world war. Christopher Othen studied linguistics, literature, and law and has worked as a journalist, musician, and legal representative for asylum seekers.

Franco's Spain (Contemporary History)

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
A sibling of interwar Europe's other fascist regimes, Franco's Spain survived them all, growing to a feeble old age in an era of liberal democracy. This book looks beyond the mythology surrounding the origins of Franco's dictatorship to provide a critical overview of the regime as a whole. All phases of this history are covered: the dictatorship's emergence out of a bloody uprising against a democratic government; the "high period" of Francoism with all its poverty, hunger, and fear, as followed by a complex time of change and economic growth; and the final demise of Franco's reign amid open opposition and internal defections. Indeed, economic and social issue are as much a part this story as politics, and international relations find their place in Franco's Spain alongside purely domestic issues. The study also peers beyond the grave in its examination of the transition to democracy after Franco's death in 1975.

True Catholic Womanhood Gender Ideology in Francos Spain

True Catholic Womanhood: Gender Ideology in Franco's Spain

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Women faced conflicting demands under Francisco Franco's program of National Catholicism, finding themselves at the center of the regime's efforts to preserve tradition while promoting modernization. Even as state-sponsored economic development created a modern consumer society, church-influenced laws and institutions dictated female domesticity and upheld feminine ideals of asexuality, self-denial, and limited educational development.Imaginatively using diverse sources—including interviews, magazine advertisements, and university archives—Morcillo addresses the tension between expectations for the traditional woman, whose primary value to the state was reproductive, and those for the modern consumer-housewife ideal that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. She pays particular attention to women's experiences in higher education and in the "Women's Section" of the Falange. Her highly textured history of major women's organizations from the 1940s through the 1960s demonstrates that women successfully negotiated these contradictory demands while creating a vibrant and meaningful public space for social activism. At the same time, their spiritual devotion protected Spanish women from state retribution in their search for "true Catholic womanhood."True Catholic Womanhood adds new insights into the gender dynamics of authoritarian states, providing a unique window through which to view the process of modernization and the transition toward democracy. It is essential reading for everyone interested in modern Spain, Catholicism, European women's history, and authoritarian social politics.

Franco's Friends: How British Intelligence Helped Bring Franco to Power in Spain

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
The untold tale of MI6’s involvement in the rise of Spanish fascism. It is known that a British plane took Francisco Franco from the Canaries to Morocco at the start of the coup. What is not known is that the plane was chartered by an MI6 agent and that British secret services continued working behind the scenes in Spain through to World War II, to ensure British interests were maintained. Crucially, MI6 paid bribes to Spanish generals to keep Spain neutral, thus reaping the benefits for Britain from 1939-45. Franco’s Friends reveals how Britain made a dubious moral choice that would have repercussions on the outcome of the Second World War.Peter Day is a writer and journalist, he writes regularly for the Sunday Times and Mail on Sunday He lives in London, England.
