Ethel Waters: Stormy Weather

Ethel Waters overcame her disadvantaged childhood to become the most famous African American actress, singer, and entertainer of her time. Her critically acclaimed move to Broadway in the mid 1920s—after having first triumphed in Black vaudeville during the Harlem Renaissance—brought the startlingly innovative and subtle character of Black Theatre into the mainstream. Ethel transformed such songs as "Dinah, " "Am I Blue?, " "Stormy Weather, " and Irving Berlin's "Heat Wave" into classics and inspired the next generation of Black female vocalists. She gave sophistication and class to the blues and American popular song, and she influenced countless singers including Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra.Tough, uncompromising, courageous, and ambitious, Ethel Waters became one of the first African American women to be given equal billing with white stars on the Broadway stage. In 1943, the film version of her Broadway success, Cabin in the Sky, established her as Hollywood's first Black-leading lady. In such plays as Mamba's Daughters and films including The Member of the Wedding, she shattered the myth that Black women could perform only as singers. For her work in Pinky, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, the second African American to be so honored.Although she was arguably the most influential female blues and jazz singer of the 1920s and 1930s, as well as a major Black figure in 20th century theatre, cinema, radio, and television, she is now the least remembered. In Ethel Waters: Stormy Weather, Stephen Bourne documents the career of this monumental figure in American popular culture, offering new insights into the work of this forgotten legend. Supplemented by fourteen photographs, this biography leaves little doubt as to why—for decades—no other Black star was held in such high regard.

"New results require new thinking. The Missing Piece in Leadership is a shift from the 'way it's always been done' to a 'what's possible?' mindset that creates an endless well of options and opportunities. Krug helps people discard previous conditioning and reconnect with their innate leadership abilities." Stephen M. R. Covey, author of the New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller The Speed of Trust What if everything you ve learned about how to manage people is wrong? The Missing Piece in Leadership invites you to set aside your best practices and start asking the right questions about your role as a leader. Daniel Pink, Author Drive and A Whole New Mind Bring Common Sense Back to Common Practice The Missing Piece in Leadership brings common sense back to leadership in a simple and straightforward way that unlocks and releases tremendous untapped potential in your people. If you could greatly enhance your ability to solve even your biggest problems before you finish reading The Missing Piece in Leadership, what would be the personal benefits? The Missing Piece in Leadership is written for leaders who are doing their best at what they ve been taught and still not getting the desired results. These leaders days are often filled with stress and effort. The Missing Piece in Leadership is not just another book about leadership. It provides a path for discovering and bringing out your own unique leadership competencies and qualities essential to sustain high-performance. According to Doug Krug, "In over 20 years of working with executive teams throughout the public and private sectors I have met very, very few bad leaders. I have worked with many leaders who are good people who have inherited less than effective habits. Much of the stress and effort experienced today is actually caused by these inherited ways of doing things." The Missing Piece in Leadership reveals: Why so many leadership trainings produce less than desired results. The one fundamental shift in thinking essential for any organization to create more of what they want. Factors that impact results we are able to produce every day that have become invisible through familiarityTM. How to achieve the mental edge that leads to consistent and sustainable high performance. How to turn survival to thrival in our rapidly changing, dynamic environment. There is no "one size fits all" leadership approach. If there were only one way to be an effective, inspiring leader, there would only be one book on the shelf in the book store. The transformation in thinking possible through this breakthrough process enables the reader to discover for themselves what they can do to create more of what they want, while reducing the stress and effort. Doug Krug and The Missing Piece in Leadership are key pieces in helping organizations get results through their people. D. Michael Abrashoff, Author It s Your Ship "Regardless of how long you've had the privilege to lead, effective leaders are always looking for ways to improve! Whether you're new to the leadership game, or a grizzled veteran, Doug Krug has written an insightful book that will add some useful arrows to your leadership quiver!" Elliott Powell, Jr. Assistant Director, Federal Consulting Group National Business Center Department of Interior "Your insight and wisdom in leadership that has meant so much to the Colorado Rockie s organization. As you were witness to, we were an organization in transition on 2004 when you first worked with us, and then a different organization in 2006 when we met again. No coincidence we made the World Series the following year in 2007. Thanks for your help and again, your insight." Charles Monfort Owner Colorado Rockies Baseball

Ethel Ernest A True Story

Ethel & Ernest: A True Story

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
Poignant, funny, and utterly original, Ethel & Ernest is Raymond Briggs's loving depiction of his parents' lives from their chance first encounter in the 1920s until their deaths in the 1970s. Ethel and Ernest were solid members of the English working class, part of the generation that lived through the most tumultuous years of the twentieth century. They met during the Depression--she working as a maid, he as a milkman--and we follow them as they court and marry, make a home, raise their son, and cope with the dark days of World War II. Briggs's portrayal of how his parents succeeded, or failed, in coming to terms with the events of their rapidly shifting world--the advent of radio, television, and telephones; the development of the atomic bomb; the moon landing; the social and political turmoil of the sixties--is irresistibly engaging, full of sympathy and affection, yet clear-eyed and unsentimental.Briggs's illustrations are small masterpieces; coupled with the wonderfully candid dialogue, they evoke the exhilaration and sorrow, excitement and bewilderment, of experiencing such enormous changes. As much a social history as a personal account, Ethel & Ernest is a moving tribute to ordinary people living in an extraordinary time. From the Hardcover edition.

Impressions That Remained - Memoirs Of Ethel Smyth

Impressions That Remained - Memoirs Of Ethel Smyth

IMPRESSIONS THAT REMAINED emoirs By ETHEL SMYTH. Originally published in 1919. INTRODUCTION: Ethel Smyths Impressions That Remained when it was first published in England I expressed the opinion that this was one of the half-dozen best autobiographies in the English language. This estimate has been confirmed by a recent re-reading of it for the present American edition. But there are several other books by the same author equally worth reading, for Ethel Smyth was one of the most remarkable women of her epoch and I am glad that a request from Mr. Alfred Knopf to furnish an Introduction to this new edition affords me an opportunity of telling the American musi cal public more about her than is contained in her first book. The autobiography may be trusted to tell its own story so far as it goes. But it was issued in 1919, and a great deal happened be tween then and the authors death in 1944. The memoirs, apart from a brief reference in the Epilogue to friends or incidents of the years immediately following, carry us only as far as 1892. Writing as she did in 1918 her scope was necessarily restricted here and there by the fact that several people who had played a considerable part in her life-story were still alive. One of these was the Ex-Empress Eug6-nie of France, with whom she was on terms of close friendship for more than a quarter of a century from 1890 onwards, the Empresss English estate at Farnborough Hill being close to the Smyth house at Frimley and to later residences of Ethel. It would obviously have been impossible for the author to write about the Empress at any length or with any freedom while she was still alive. She died, at the age of ninety-five in July 1920 a year or so after the publication of the Impressions and in her second book, Streaks of Life 1921 , Ethel Smyth painted a portrait of her that is not only fascinating in itself but of value to students and historians of the Second Empire. The passing of the Empress from the scene also placed the author Introduction at liberty to indulge in some amusing reminiscences of the old Queen Victoria, with whom she had come into contact through Eug6nie they include the rich story, told with rich humour, of the dreadful breach of etiquette of which Ethel was innocently guilty at an after-dinner reception at Balmoral. At one end of the large room was a fireplace, and in front of this a hearthrug on which, in remote dignity, the Queen was standing with the Empress. Lead ing up to the two august ladies, says Ethel, was an avenue composed of royal personages ranged, as I afterwards found out, in order of precedence, the highest in rank being closest to the hearthrug which avenue, broadening towards its base, gradually became mere ladies and gentlemen of the Court, and finally petered out in a group of Maids of Honour huddled ingloriously in the bay-window...
