As Russia tries to establish the foundations of a stable and productive market-based economic system, it must determine the importance of the state to its prospects. What kind of political order corresponds to the challenges that Russia faces in the post-Soviet period? This analysis argues that geography matters a great deal and the state remains central in compensating for the austere implications of economic geography for Russia's economic prospects under market circumstances.

Legacy Treasures of The Russian Ballet

Legacy: Treasures of The Russian Ballet

Get free shipping on orders over $25! (In-Stock)
Russia's two great ballet companies, the Bolshoi Ballet and the Kirov Ballet (now the Mariinsky) undertook their first major post-war tours in the early 1960s, exposing the West to the bravura and discipline of the Russian dancers for the first time. This DVD brings together performances by members of both companies, providing rare footage of some of the most brilliant dancers of their time. The Stone Flower features Yuri Soloviev, a dancer of great renown despite his tragically short life. Famed for his extraordinary elevation, he was often compared to Nijinsky. Soloviev was celebrated for his role of Danila in The Stone Flower, a ballet in which he and Alla Sizova, who danced the role of Katerina, enjoyed immense success at Covent Garden during the tour of 1960. This BBC recording of Act 1 was a result of the enthusiastic response to the production. The Pas de deux from Act II of Swan Lake comes from the Bolshoi's famous 1956 debut tour to London. Specially shot for the BBC and produced by Margaret Dale, a renowned dancer and ballet producer, the broadcast drew 12 million viewers and became the first of many films for television that Dale made with the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies. The remaining four Bolshoi Ballet extracts - Cinderella, Giselle, Gayaneh and Don Quixote - comprise shorter selections, specially filmed for the BBC in 1963, once again produced by Margaret Dale. Each of the Bolshoi selections displays the immense versatility and virtuosity of the company's principal dancers, a line-up usually reserved for gala occasions. This is the first DVD released of this material.

Russia and the Russians A History

Russia and the Russians: A History

Fantastic prices with ease & comfort of Amazon.com! (In-Stock)
From the Carpathians in the west to the Greater Khingan range in the east, a huge, flat expanse dominates the Eurasian continent. Here, over more than a thousand years, the history and destiny of Russia have unfolded. In a sweeping narrative, one of the English-speaking world's leading historians of Russia follows this story from the first emergence of the Slavs in the historical record in the sixth century C.E. to the Russians' persistent appearances in today's headlines. Hosking's is a monumental story of competing legacies, of an enormous power uneasily balanced between the ideas and realities of Asian empire, European culture, and Byzantine religion; of a constantly shifting identity, from Kievan Rus to Muscovy to Russian Empire to Soviet Union to Russian Federation, and of Tsars and leaders struggling to articulate that identity over the centuries. With particular attention to non-Russian regions and ethnic groups and to Russia's relations with neighboring polities, Hosking lays out the links between political, economic, social, and cultural phenomena that have made Russia what it is--a world at once familiar and mysterious to Western observers. In a clear and engaging style, he conducts us through the Mongol invasions, the rise of autocracy, the reigns of Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great, the battle against Napoleon, the emancipation of the serfs, the Crimean War, the Bolshevik Revolution, Stalin's reign of terror, the two World Wars, the end of the USSR, to today's war against Chechnya. Hosking's history is shot through with the understanding that becoming an empire has prevented Russia from becoming a nation and has perpetuated archaic personal forms of power. This book is the most penetrating and comprehensive account yet of what such a legacy has meant--to Russia, and to the world. (20010415)
