Megaproducer Stephen J. Cannell scored yet another of his numerous hits with the police drama HUNTER, an NBC series that ran for a respectable seven seasons, from the fall of 1984 through the fall of 1991. Assessed by many as a successful attempt to recapture the popularity of Dirty Harry on the small screen, the program starred Fred Dryer as Detective Sergeant Rick Hunter, a stalwart member of the Los Angeles Police Department's homicide division, who wielded an enormous magnum and repeatedly demonstrated his fondness for firing first and asking questions afterward. His stock phrase was "Works for me, " a saying that he uttered as a justification of his no-nonsense, hyper-aggressive approach to doling out justice. Assisting Hunter was Dee Dee McCall (Stepfanie Kramer), an astonishingly sexy but ruthless female cop, nicknamed "The Brass Cupcake." Clive Barker's feature directing debut graphically depicts the tale of a man and wife who move into an old house and discover a hideous creature--the man's half-brother, who is also the woman's former lover--hiding upstairs. Having lost his earthly body to a trio of S&M demons called the Cenobites, he is brought back into existence by a drop of blood on the floor. He soon forces his former mistress to bring him human sacrifices to complete his body... but the Cenobites won't be happy about this. One of the best horror films of the 1980s, HELLRAISER is based on Barker's novel THE HELLBOUND HEART and was followed by three sequels.
