(In-Stock) The second half of the 1950s was a relatively active period for Lena Horne as a recording artist. Regularly appearing at the country's top nightclub venues, such as the Waldorf Astoria in New York and the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, she had an exclusive recording contract with RCA Victor that resulted in regular releases. The British Avid Easy label takes advantage of the 50-year copyright on recordings in Europe to compile this 57-track, two-hour-and-37-minute two-CD set, containing Horne's four RCA LPs of the period, Lena Horne at the Waldorf Astoria, Stormy Weather, Give the Lady What She Wants, and A Friend of Yours: Songs by Burke and Van Heusen, plus the four-song EP Lena Horne at the Cocoanut Grove. The Waldorf Astoria album, recorded live, gives a good sense of her vibrant, authoritative stage show and was a Top 30 hit in 1957. Stormy Weather, a studio LP most of which was recorded just after the Waldorf Astoria shows, did not chart, but has attracted great attention since for its collection of tor | | SEE IT |

(In-Stock) This collection features music from Lena Horne's movies and Broadway performances. In 1965, Lena Horne signed to United Artists Records, for which she recorded four albums in two years: Feelin' Good, Lena in Hollywood, Soul, and the Christmas collection Merry From Lena. This brief, budget-priced compilation is drawn from the first two of those albums. Of course, it does not live up to its title. Nor does it correspond to the description in Don Ovens' short, unreliable biography ("This collection features much of the music that was popular during Lena's movie days" is a false statement). What it does contain are Horne's interpretations of some of the well-remembered Hollywood and Broadway songs of the 1950s and '60s, such as "Moon River, " "Who Can I Turn To, " and "Never on Sunday." The mid-'60s were a difficult time for her as a performer, with musical tastes changing radically as she approached the age of 50 still wanting to sing songs like Cole Porter's "I Love Paris." On her UA recordings, she demonstrated t | | SEE IT |

More than anything else, she was a nightclub singer, and, for better or worse, Merry from Lena had the sound of a collection that had been put together as a holiday nightclub act. That started with a new Ray Ellis arrangement of "Jingle Bells" with some new lyrics by longtime Tin Pan Alley wordsmith Al Stillman and now called "Jingle All the Way." In addition to allowing Ellis and Stillman to claim songwriting royalties on a traditional song, the track heralded the style of the album, which was snappy and a bit adult-oriented. This was also true, for example, of Horne's treatment of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, " which she began by speculating about the possibility that Rudolph's nose was red because he was | | SEE IT |
