Two kids, George and Lori, have literally discovered a new world. Hidden deep underground for centuries, the tiny bottled city of Shandar is unearthed in an excavation site. Damaged from the dig, the dormant, miniaturized metropolis reawakens, unprotected from an inter-dimensional team of assassins sent to destroy it. Aided by Shandar's caretaker Prime, George and Lori must find a way to stop the death squad and restore power to the city before it uncontrollably expands to its normal size, annihilating itself and everything around it.

On a desert mesa outside Santa Fe, Richard Tuttle invents his mysterious and marvellously humble forms, made of wire, cardboard, wood. In Taos, Agnes Martin rhythmically repeats extremely simplified images. Near the Santa Monica surf, John Baldessari, aims for successful juxtapositions of photographs and text. In his North Hollywood living room, Robert Williams revels in surreal cartoon imagery. At a cabin in Woodstock, Joan Snyder refines her sensuous art amid a lush forest. Mike Bidlo salutes Duchamp in a SoHo Gallery, while on Sunset Boulevard, Amy Adler reclaims personal history through self-portraits. Through this group of memorable iconoclasts, the creative "act" is there to see and study. Along with writer Dave Hickey, and others, Simplicity addresses artists' relations with the press, feelings about showing one's work, distilling concepts into an essence, and what it means to succeed in the artworld. A breakout hit at the Sundance Film Festival, Blue Car tells the story of 18-year-old Meg (Agnes Bruckner), who--while coping with her disturbed younger sister and her angry mother--finds a refuge from her stormy home life with her English teacher, Mr. Auster (David Strathairn, Passion Fish, L.A. Confidential). His encouragement leads her to apply to a poetry competition in Florida, even though her mother (Margaret Colin) offers neither money nor emotional support. Blue Car depicts her increasing attachment to her teacher--and his increasing attraction to her--with respect and careful detail, providing an acutely female perspective on the experience (this is writer-director Karen Moncrieff's feature film debut). The interplay between Bruckner and Colin is just as vital, even though the writing of their relationship is more familiar.
