Class counts. Rather than describing the U.S. punk subculture only through its music, Hannon takes a broader look at how punk has influenced the media, fashion, and language since its beginnings in the 1970s. Thematic chapters deal with topics including punk gathering places, women in punk, and punk fashion and art. Especially interesting is the collection of primary documents that end the book, which includes interviews with Dead Kennedys front man Jello Biafra and Riot Grrrl founder Kathleen Hanna.
